A Tale of One City: How Democrats with Good Data Beat the Odds

by: da

Wed Nov 18, 2009 at 10:16:10 AM PST

(While they won't replace good old-fashioned shoe leather, tools matter. - promoted by Brian Leubitz)

Consultants in California and everywhere would like us to believe that the money game is everything. But something seems to be changing. On November 3rd of this year, a loose coalition of progressive groups won a tremendous set of victories in a small California city despite getting outspent by a factor of more than 20. This could be what California democracy would look like if it was built on a person to person foundation. The following is a first-person account from Hillary Blackerby, Secretary of the local Democratic Party organization, who asked me to post it (full discolsure, this post says nice things about California VoterConnect):

The City of Santa Barbara on California's Central Coast is one of those silly places that still has its city elections in November of odd years. Our city ballot this year consisted of a mayor's seat, 3 city council seats and 4 ballot measures. Two of the five mayoral candidates were current sitting councilmembers with time left in their terms, so if one of them were to win the mayor's seat, the 4th highest vote getter in the council race would get a 2 year term to finish out the mayor's council term. There were thirteen candidates for city council.

Progressive organizations with ground forces that were activated for the campaign included...

Ah, Mr. Republican Insider Finally Lost It

by: Andrew Davey (atdleft)

Mon Apr 23, 2007 at 17:20:19 PM PDT

I'm not sure where to even being rebutting this post, which is a rich combination of paranoia and grandiosity that would make your hero Art Pedroza proud. [...]
Andrew, if you really want to see a "noise machine" all you need to do is read your own posts: loaded with straw men, unsupported assumptions, jumped-to-conclusions, screechy rhetoric and paranoia.

Hey, looky here! Jubal/Matt Cunningham responded to my post, which was a response to Jubal/Matt's response to Art Pedroza's original "Chismes" post on Orange Juice that caused the entire Orange County Republican Party to explode. Ain't it amazing how these supposedly omnipotent Republican insiders are shaking at the boots at the thought that their ridiculous scheme to allow someone who ran one of the most racist campaigns in Orange County history to run their "voter registration program" in minority-majority Central County is being exposed? And that the sheer stupidity of this plan of theirs is now out in the open, for all to see?

So why is Jubal/Matt still fuming over this? Well, he completely lost control. And why is he so angry about that? Well, I'll tell you all about it after the flip...

Republican Insiders See Us As "Punks With Computers"

by: Andrew Davey (atdleft)

Sun Apr 22, 2007 at 09:42:34 AM PDT

(Oh yeah, and before I forget... Horray for Orange Juice! They've been so courageous during this whole time in standing fast against efforts by the Orange County Republican Party to censor them. I only wish I had the tenacity of Art Pedroza, Claudio Gallegos, and the entire O-J Team! : ) - promoted by atdleft)

A long time ago I was told that in this business you are judged by your enemies. If your enemies are mostly democrats then you must be doing something right. They're willing to tear you down, especially people like Andrew Davey who posted on the Calitics page. He's just a punk with a computer.

That was former campaign manager for Republican Alan Uke in the 50th Congressional District, campaign manager for Republican Lynn Daucher in SD 34, and all-around insider in the Orange County Republican Party, Bryan Lanza... Speaking about little ol' me. So why is the OC GOP political elite suddenly wailing over me at Red County/OC Blog? Follow me after the flip to find out...

CA-42: The "Red County" GOP Machine Stands By Its Man

by: Andrew Davey (atdleft)

Wed Apr 11, 2007 at 13:57:07 PM PDT

(Cross-posted at Trash Dirty Gary, Southern California's resource for revealing Gary Miller's true record of disservice to his constituents... AND a place for action in restoring honor and integrity to the 42nd Congressional District - promoted by atdleft)

I hope the Dems spend huge sums of money trying to defeat Congressman Miller.

Given the demographics of the district as well as Mr. Miller's ability to self fund any defensive campaign which might be required, I can't think of a better way for them to waste their resources.

So why is "One Who Knows" getting all worked up on GOP insider hangout Red County/OC Blog about a challenge to Dirty Gary Miller in the 42nd Congressional District? Oh, only because the DCCC is actually turning up the heat on Dirty Gary. Oh my, real democracy is such a "waste of resources"... But wait! It gets better!

(And I'll tell you all about it after the flip...)

We're Voting on February 5... And Our Opportunity Has Just Arrived!

by: Andrew Davey (atdleft)

Thu Mar 15, 2007 at 16:56:13 PM PDT

This just in from The OC Register:

Gov. Arnold Schwarzenegger today moved California's presidential primary from June to February, giving the nation's most populous state a greater stake in selecting nominees and shaking up the 2008 political calendar.

"Now California is important again in presidential nominating politics ... and we will get the respect that California deserves," Schwarzenegger said during a bill-signing ceremony.

Hopefully, all of us will now use this opportunity to truly SHAKE THINGS UP. Now that California voters will now be "The Deciders" in who gets the party nomination, let's get out there and tell our family, friends, and neighbors why their votes matter. I know I'm excited about the change, and I'll explain to you why I'm so excited after the flip...

The Surreal Politics of Orange County: Republican Consultants Need a Wake-up Call

by: Andrew Davey (atdleft)

Fri Feb 02, 2007 at 07:19:55 AM PST

I was lurking OC Blog/Red County (the Orange County hangout for Republican insiders and consultants) yesterday and found this doozie by GOP consultant Jubal/Matt Cunningham. Basically, it's a rebuke of Nicole Rivera's recent post on the California Progress Report about the resurgence of Orange County Democrats. Now Jubal would like to think that it's Nicole who needs a "tutoring in reality", but I must beg to differ. If anything, Jubal and his GOP consultant friends need to wake up and smell the coffee:
Their party is falling apart in Central Orange County while we're getting our act together!

Would you like to see how OC Blog is wrong in its slam of OC Democrats? And is OC forever doomed to be "Red County"? Well, follow me after the flip to find out...
