Evan Low for California State Assembly

by: fnpople

Sun Mar 27, 2011 at 10:45:47 AM PDT

(cross-posted on Dailykos)

Evan Low is one of a rare breed-a true public servant and a progressive leader we all need to start paying attention to.

For those who don't know him, Evan is a local boy done good. A Silicon Valley native, Evan graduated from De Anza Community College and San Jose State before graduating from the John F. Kennedy School of Government at Harvard. While attending college, Evan served on the Santa Clara Commission on Senior Care, and also worked with the Volunteer Center of Silicon Valley and the Campbell Chamber of Commerce.

CA Lt. Governor Race: Candidate Senator Dean Florez Reports $1 Million In Cash For Upcoming Race

by: curtislwalker

Tue Feb 02, 2010 at 15:25:23 PM PST

In a letter sent today, Dean Florez, the Senate Majority Leader and candidate for Lieutenant Governor, reported having raised more than three times as much as the next candidate, in addition to gaining some important endorsements statewide.

Florez, a Democrat from California's Central Valley known for taking on irresponsible industry and lax government oversight, literally saving millions in taxpayer dollars, has already raised approximately $1.5 million in campaign contributions, with nearly $1 million dollars of cash still on hand.

Another candidate, Los Angeles City Councilwoman Janice Hahn just reported she has raised some $420,691 for the race and has less than $341,000 cash on hand for the upcoming June primary.

Pushing Back for Progressive Values: No All-Cuts Budget

by: Mark DeSaulnier

Thu Jun 25, 2009 at 17:08:05 PM PDT

(Welcome Sen. DeSaulnier - promoted by Brian Leubitz)

At the Contra Costa County United Democratic Campaign CD 10 candidates' forum last week, the candidates were asked to list examples of when they had defied Democratic party leadership in order to stand up for progressive values and make real change.  I told the audience of Contra Costa Democratic activists that I had a history of doing so, and in fact might have to do so if the leadership put an all-cuts budget up for a vote this week in the Senate.  Yesterday, I kept my promise and did not vote for the all-cuts budget that was brought to the floor.

Progressive values and commonsense dictate that we have a budget that combines cuts with increases in revenue.  A cuts-only budget is a recipe for disaster in California and severely hurts the most vulnerable of our fellow Californians.  In an era of "yes we can," the Governor and Republican legislators are telling Californians "no they can't" have sensible solutions to California's budget crisis.  They have pushed Democrats into a "through the looking glass" scenario where Democrats are on the record voting for $11 billion in cuts and Republicans are on the record voting against them, but there is no record that in fact the Republicans want even deeper cuts and refuse to support any tax increases whatsoever.  Only in Sacramento could such an Alice in Wonderland scenario unfold.

The truth is that standing up for progressive values sometimes dictates that we go against the decisions of our leadership.  I cannot in good conscience vote for a budget that does not include significant revenue increases.  In the next few days, we will have votes on raising revenue through an oil severance tax and an increase in the tobacco tax.  I will vote for those because proposals to increase revenue to the state must be part of any solution to California's deficit.

In addition, I joined with Senator Lois Wolk in writing the Legislative Analyst's Office seeking advice on the most efficient way to close corporate tax loopholes in California.  There are approximately $50 billion - $50 billion! - in tax loopholes that exist right now.

It's time to push back hard against the ideological inflexibility of the Governor and the Republicans in the legislature and make them take responsibility in front of the voters for their efforts to drive California over a fiscal cliff.  There is no proposal that will create a budget that is pain free.  But an all-cuts budget is the most painful for the people who are the most vulnerable.

We can do better for California.  Yes, as progressives, we can stand up to make a bad budget better.  That was my promise to the Contra Costa Democrats last Friday and it's my promise to you today.

(CA80AD) More and Better, and Ready to Win

by: Beth Caskie

Tue Jul 15, 2008 at 22:48:15 PM PDT

Disclosure:  I've been with this campaign since the 2007 CDP Convention.

Manuel Perez has a significant, double-digit lead over his Republican opponent and
is well-positioned to win back the seat for Democrats in California's 80th Assembly
That's the latest polling we have (Source: Heidi von Szeliski and Associates), and it looks good all over.

This has been a district made for Democrats to win since the last redistricting, and yet we've lost over and over.  But now California Democrats are heading into the general of a key battleground for our 2/3 majority fight with four major factors in our favor:  numbers, nominee, polling and ground game.

CA-44: Wanna see a fight?

by: BlueWave2008

Mon Feb 04, 2008 at 10:55:36 AM PST

If he wins the Democratic nomination on June 3, 2008, Rogelio V. Morales will deliver the most bruising fight Congressman Ken Calvert has ever been in. Given Rogelio's humble background, to even be in the position to run for congress is incredible and fills me with pride to be an American. So kicking Ken Calvert's butt should be a piece of cake for Rogelio!

I know Rogelio (pronounced row-hell-leo) and believe me when I say he will make Calvert's life a living hell. Even if he were to lose the general, I am sure Calvert will not want to face Rogelio a second time. By 2010, if he survives, Calvert will be too rich to care since he is in Congress for himself and Calvert Properties.

Rogelio = former infantry Marine. Nuff said. www.morales2008.com

Rogelio V. Morales--New Candidate for the 44th Congressional District

by: BlueWave2008

Fri Jan 11, 2008 at 14:18:30 PM PST

Rogelio V. Morales is a new Democratic candidate in the 2008 congressional elections for the 44th Congressional District (map) of California. He is seeking the Democratic nomination to challenge incumbent Rep. Ken Calvert (R-Calif.). The primary will take place on June 3, 2008. He is going up against Bill Hedrick and Louis Vandenberg.

Here's his biography and background information, from http://www.sourcewatch.org/ind...

"Rogelio V. Morales's life is a testament to the continuing vitality of the American Dream.

Rogelio (pronounced row-hell-leo) was born in Los Angeles, CA. As a first-generation American, Rogelio was raised by illiterate Mexican immigrants whose combined schooling totaled a third-grade education. He also attended 92nd Street Elementary School in Watts, Los Angeles, CA. Throughout his childhood, Rogelio was often surrounded by gang violence, poverty and drugs.

In 1987, Rogelio's family moved to the Inland Empire after his father's job relocated to Riverside, CA. He attended several schools in the district, including Myra Lynn Elementary School, La Sierra Academy and La Sierra High School. In June 1995, Rogelio graduated from John W. North High School. A month later, he joined the United States Marine Corps.

Throughout his enlistment in the Marine Corps, Rogelio received several awards and commendations. In 1997, at the age of 20, he was selected by his unit commander to represent his infantry company in the Marine Corps' Annual Rifle Squad Competition (ARSC). At the competition's end, his unit was recognized as the "most combat ready rifle squad in 1st Marine Division." According to his Navy Achievement Medal citation, Rogelio's leadership as a fire team leader was "instrumental" to his rifle squad's first place finish. Later that same year, Rogelio was awarded the ARSC Badge by the Commandant of the Marine Corps, General C.C. Krulak, at an awards ceremony held at Marine Barracks, in Washington, D.C. Looking back on his achievements, however, Rogelio remains humbled by the awesome privilege of once being in command of Americans who had chosen to serve their country.

After being discharged from active duty in 1999, Rogelio enrolled at Riverside Community College (RCC). At RCC, he excelled at academics and student government. Rogelio graduated in the summer of 2002 and earned the honor of being named the student commencement speaker. That summer, he transferred to the University of California, Los Angeles (UCLA). In 2004, Rogelio graduated from UCLA with a B.A. in Political Science. Then in September 2005, Rogelio enrolled in the Juris Doctorate program at the University of Washington, in Seattle, WA. Rogelio expects his law degree in March 2008.

Truly, Rogelio V. Morales represents new, exciting leadership the 44th Congressional District can be proud to call its own."

Here is some background information on the candidate as well:

• Full Legal Name: Rogelio Vergara Morales

• Place of Birth: Martin Luther King, Jr. Hospital in Los Angeles, CA.

• Age: 30 years old (as of 12/31/2007)

• Military Rank Attained: Corporal (E-4)

• Type of Discharge: Honorable

• Marital Status: Single/ Never Married

• Political Party: Democrat

• Religion: Christian - Protestant

• Other Languages: Spanish

• Reason for Running:

"Congressman Calvert has lost touch with the values and priorities of the 44th Congressional District. What's worse, Congressman Calvert is no longer an effective representative to aid our district's emerging political and economic importance. As your congressman, I promise to restore the special trust and confidence voters demand from their representatives. Indeed, I believe the best and brightest days for our district are still ahead, and I intend to hasten their long-awaited arrival."  --Rogelio V. Morales, Democratic Candidate, U.S. Congress --

Why I'm running for state assembly in the 27th District

by: ereilly

Mon Aug 20, 2007 at 16:37:16 PM PDT

(I've been meaning to get this up, but it's been a busy day. Welcome, Mayor Reilly. - promoted by Brian Leubitz)

My name is Emily Reilly, mayor of Santa Cruz.  I am running for the Assembly in the 27th district.  As a member of the Assembly I will draw on the progressive values of equality, fairness and opportunity to address the challenges faced by residents of Santa Cruz, Monterey and Santa Clara counties: protecting the environment, improving transportation and fighting for universal health care.

It is important that I communicate directly with the voters in my district – that I participate in a two-way discussion about the issues that are important to all of us.  As a center of netroots activism in our state, Calitics is one avenue I hope to utilize in this discussion.  Santa Cruz, Monterey and Santa Clara counties are home to strong grassroots communities, and the emergence of online political participation is a natural fit in my district.
