On A May-December Romance, Part Two, Or, Las Vegas, Integrated

by: fake consultant

Tue May 12, 2009 at 04:39:27 AM PDT

Moulin Rouge.

The mention of that name, in the right circles, brings back a flood of associations.

Among them: a famous cabaret in Gay Paree, a Nicole Kidman movie rich in costume and set design and...well, a movie, anyway; or, if you really know your films, perhaps the association is with the 1952 John Huston "biography" film of the same name.

The one association that might not quickly come to mind, even though it should: ground zero in a battle that led to the desegregation of Las Vegas.

Today's story will fill in the blanks that you might have regarding that association-and by the time we're done, we'll have covered, just as we promised last time, the 55-year history of a place that began in 1955, lasted for not quite six months, and ended just last week...maybe.

It's another one of those American history stories you never heard before, and it's well worth the telling...so let's get right to it.

On A May-December Romance, Part One, Or, Las Vegas, Segregated

by: fake consultant

Mon Apr 13, 2009 at 22:11:16 PM PDT

There may be no more recognizable icon of "Retro-Cool" than that photograph of the Rat Pack standing in front of the marquee at The Sands Hotel in Las Vegas.

They're right there, lined up in front of their own giant names on the marquee: Frank Sinatra, Dean Martin, Sammy Davis, Jr., Peter Lawford, and Joey Bishop.

Night after night they would gather with friends such as Shirley MacLaine, Angie Dickinson, and Johnny Carson, to deliver some of the greatest nightclub performances in entertainment history.

Today's story, however, focuses on what happened after the show: when four of those five could leave the showroom, drink at the bar, gamble at the casino, and go upstairs to their rooms.

In a town sometimes known as the "Mississippi of the West", however, one of those five performers could not do any of those things.

Our Journey In Two Parts literally crosses over to the "wrong side of the tracks", tells a story of segregation overcome, and recounts the six-month history of a Las Vegas hotel that has a 55-year history: the Moulin Rouge.

Issa Schooled For HSR Lies

by: David Dayen

Tue Feb 24, 2009 at 16:25:08 PM PST

Darrell Issa has had an interesting position in the 111th Congress as one of the chief yarn-spinners on the Republican side.  I guess it's because he's immune to any charge of hypocrisy.  First he demanded White House compliance with necessary Presidential Records Act laws regarding email, after playing down the Bush Administration's major failings in this regard.  Yesterday, he appeared on MSNBC with David Shuster to parrot the latest RNC talking point, that the stimulus earmarked construction of an LA-to-Las Vegas high speed rail train.  Now, I'm not sure what's so horrible about this - LA to Vegas is a busy corridor, especially on the weekends, and the route essentially goes through desert so construction will be disruptive to almost no communities.  But the fact is that it's completely untrue - LA to Vegas is not on the current DOT high speed rail lists and no money expressly goes toward construction of that corridor.  A fact that David Shuster inconveniently pointed out.  I particularly enjoy the smile after he knows he's been caught.

This zombie lie isn't going away, but at least some reporters aren't taking the bait.

Jerry Hill in trouble in AD 19

by: LarryAlvarez

Tue Apr 22, 2008 at 18:42:11 PM PDT

Out here in San Mateo, things are getting sexy.  Last year our Sheriff was nailed in a brothel in Vegas, but since the johns were not charged, he walked.  There was a stink, as one could imagine, but in the end nothing happened.  Flash forward to a year later, our new Congresswoman Jackie Speier, joined by Congresswoman Anna Eschoo came down hard on the Board of Supervisors for sitting on their hands last year and demanding a full investigation.

What makes this interesting is that over the course of the last year, Munks has donated to the campaigns of all five Supervisors, and between him, his wife, and his in-laws, he gave Hill, candidate for the 19th AD around 10 grand.  The County is going into full-bore ass-covering mode like I've never seen before, and it looks like it's anyone's race from here on out.  Links below for those who are interested, and I'll be adding on as things get more interesting.

The Big Dog In North Las Vegas

by: David Dayen

Fri Jan 18, 2008 at 18:51:20 PM PST

So we're in the Obama press area awaiting his arrival (in about an hour, I'm told), and I had some time to write, and elaborate on what I told our Northern Nevadaticians over the phone.

We just got back from a Bill Clinton event in North Las Vegas at a local YMCA.  There were about 150-200 people there, which seemed small to me.  Bill came out and said he mostly wanted to take questions, and then proceeded to talk for about 45 minutes (hah!).  It was a solid speech, completely extemporaneous, talking about the challenges we must face in the next four years and how his wife is best able to face them.  But there was one glaringly strange moment.

Nevadatics: On The Ground In Vegas

by: David Dayen

Fri Jan 18, 2008 at 12:46:07 PM PST

We just arrived on the Strip about 20 minutes ago.  We'll be at campaign events for Obama and Clinton tonight, and out at the caucus sites tomorrow (Mittens Romney will be out at a caucus site at 7:30am, so that could be fun).

I find it instructive to watch the local news reports on caucus eve.  Despite what you'd think, there's been about 3 minutes of coverage of the caucuses in the last half-hour.  They've actually devoted more to the local women's roller derby team than the caucuses. (ah, local news).  One station had an end-of-the-newscast story where the reporter showed a bunch of pictures of the candidates to people on the street and asked them to name them.  It wasn't pretty.

When people say they don't know who'll show up to these caucuses, I believe it.  It doesn't seem as central to the local scene as, say, the Danny Gans show.

One thing I did notice on the news: Nevada's unemployment rate is up to 5.8%, the highest rate since April of 2002.  I've heard that it's been a bad winter in Las Vegas, which may impact the desire of people to caucus if it means missing their shift at the casinos.  (By the way, the casinos made $25 billion last year, so they're not exactly hurting; but the employees aren't doing all that well.)

Obama and Clinton both have ads up; Clinton's has this old NFL Films music on it, and it's a little surprising that they went el cheapo on the score).

Feb 2008 Ballot: Indian Tribes Fight Employee Rights

by: Elliott Petty

Mon Nov 12, 2007 at 16:34:46 PM PST

(This is going to be a major battle and February is just a few months away, so this is a good rundown of what's at stake. Full disclosure: I have done some video work for UNITE HERE. - promoted by David Dayen)

If you don't follow the daily happenings in Sacramento, you can easily be confused about four ballot initiatives slated for the February 5th Presidential Primary Elections.  In four separate propositions, voters will be asked to approve state gaming compacts with four individual tribes looking to expand their casino fortunes. If approved, worker rights will continue to be non-existent at the Las Vegas-styled resorts.
