Weekend Open Thread

by: Brian Leubitz

What's going on this Valentine's/President's Day weekend?

• Leon Panetta was easily confirmed as CIA Director.

• A cool Jewish Community Federation event if you are in SF on the morning of Feb. 24: Shai Aggasi, CEO of Better Place will be giving the keynote to the group's Business Leadership Council breakfast.  Better Place is a very interesting company that is trying to build infrastructure for an electric car network.  They have actually already begun work on networks in Israel and Denmark, and have come to some agreements with some California mayors (including SF's Gavin Newsom and SJ's Chuck Reed).  From what I hear, he's also a very good speaker.

• The Chief of Cal Fire, Ruben D. Grijalva, plans on retiring after about three years in the gig. Arnold has appointed Del Walters to replace him.

Bill Clinton will not be canceling his speech at the Manchester Hyatt. A coalition of groups made a big public push against the speech because the owner of the hotel, Doug Manchester, was an early and key donor to the Yes on Prop 8 campaign.  He will be violating a labor sanctioned boycott, and will have to cross a picket line, to grab a pile of bucks.  Stay classy, Mr. President.

• This is a good recap of a conference call with Assemblyman John Perez on marriage equality issues.

• It'll probably never happen, but former GOP Assemblyman Bill Maze wants to split California into two states.  Unlike most of these proposals, he wants to split the coastal areas from the inland areas, creating one rural state of 45 counties and, basically, Chile, with 13 counties but including LA, San Francisco and San Jose, and therefore most of the people.

The SJ Merc takes a look at the stimulus and specifically what's in it for Silicon Valley firms.  If you are reading this from the Valley, well, there are a lot of reasons to be glad the package will become law.

• As we await the outcome of Measure B, the solar energy proposal on the March ballot in Los Angeles, a major deal was struck in Oakland to provide solar for 845,000 homes, creating 1,300 megawatts of energy in a massive solar-thermal power deal.  This is worth keeping an eye on.

• Well, here's one way to get a job: standing out on the corner at a busy intersection.  Our intersections will get mighty busy if everyone does that, though...

I love the CA splitting proposal (0.00 / 0)
especially the "LA county uses up most of the state services" like it's a millstone around the state's neck.  I wonder, in his 45 county "California", where would the lucrative businesses come from?

Federal aid of course! (0.00 / 0)
That's how all the red states survive nowadays.

I like that "Coastal California" excludes San Diego county, as if it has more in common with the central valley than LA. Federal gerrymandering at its finest.

Agriculture (5.00 / 1)
Largest industry in CA...

Revenue (0.00 / 0)
I always thought that LA and SF areas generated more revenue for the state than they consumed. I, for one, am shaking in my boots at the thought of the state losing those economic engines like Inyo, Tuoloumne, Amador, Merced, Colusa, Tehama, Sutter and Glenn and how would we ever get along without the revenues of Nevada, Sierra, Plumas, Lassen and Modoc. BWHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHA!

it's the great conservative myth (0.00 / 0)
that if we could just get rid of the cities that suck up all the revenue, we'd have a prosperous society.

morons.

Oh NO (0.00 / 0)
This yokel Maze wants to stick Humboldt, Orange and San Diego counties into some new redneck state with an anthem by Merle Haggard? With a braintrust of Maze, Curlee, Trey, and Virgil putting up ten thousand dollars of their own money (Cue Dr. Evil)

They were Don Curlee, an agricultural journalist who writes a weekly column for the Times-Delta; Joe L. Neyer III, publisher of California Farm Equipment magazine; and Virgil Rogers, a retired farmer operating a small cattle ranch in Springville.

This makes absolutely no sense.

I've often thought that California would be far more sensible if it were divided into five to seven states, with the county level of government eliminated.

But the small states would never, ever give up their control so we could have 10 to 14 Senators.

No Real Housewives, but plenty of action at Orange County Progressive.

Come for the politics. Stay for dessert.

Oh jeez, here we go again (0.00 / 0)
Back in the early 1990s there were a series of state splitting ideas, that even made it as far as hearings in the Legislature. As I recall the most popular proposal was a three-state split (Northern, Central and Southern) but it fell apart because neither the Northern part of the state (Redding etc) or the Central part (Fresno, Bakersfield) could agree on who would get stuck with the Bay Area. ("Stuck with" because this was being driven by conservatives.) It fell apart soon thereafter.

Splitting the state is a totally impractical idea primarily because of water. SF gets its water from the Sierra, LA gets a lot of its water from the Delta. Splitting the state means trying to find a way to manage all those resources, interstate compacts, another layer of federal regulation. It's a mess.

I would be surprised if CA ever split up into separate states. Secession is more likely than that.

You can check out any time you like but you can never leave
