AD-80: Perez' Statement of Victory

by: David Dayen

Wed Jun 04, 2008 at 13:49:20 PM PDT

Your next Assemblyman from the 80th District:

Coachella, CA - Early this morning Manuel Perez declared victory in the Democratic primary in the 80th Assembly District. Perez won an overwhelming victory by building a strong multi-ethnic and diverse coalition in Riverside County and Imperial County.

"People power made the difference in this election," declared Democratic nominee Manuel Perez. "My message of hope and values resonated across both counties as voters yearned for new leadership, new energy and common values."

Progressives around the state could really learn from this guy.  I met Manuel Perez almost a year ago and was really thrilled by the transformative nature of his candidacy, someone who understands the issues facing California but can also put together the progressive argument in a broad and powerful way.  Plus he can reach out and help build a new generation of Hispanic leadership in the desert area that will leave its mark long after he's out of the picture.  Mark my words, there's a leadership position in this guy's future, sooner rather than later.

The great thing is that the best chance we have for a pickup in November is not a Lou Correa-type Democrat but a real fighter for progressive values.  You don't have to be afraid of your beliefs, you can speak to them and win.  That's what Perez' victory signifies.

(and a little labor money didn't hurt either)

Manuel was inspiring at the victory party last night (0.00 / 0)
He spoke about the work so many people had done, how honored he was by our support, the thorough interview process that the unions had, especially SEIU, and he singled out dozens of people gathered there.  He said that labor will always be here, and he will always be here for labor.

dan in sd was with us, and what a powerful person he is to add to a campaign.  I finally got to learn what JC's been up to for the last months, and as I expected, he was getting out the vote with the SOL project targeting low propensity Latino voters.  Manuel's campaign is bringing new voters to the Democratic Party, just as Obama's is.

It was good to meet everyone out there in the valley (8.00 / 1)
sandstorms and 110 degree weather didn't keep me from GOTV'ing for you all.
I believed in this campaign, and I wanted to do everything I could to help out.

Glad I was able to make a small contribution to this effort.

It was great to finally meet all of you.

What a sweet late night victory this was.
My first campaign job in 1996, this campaign manager told me that in this business, the highs are real high, and the lows are equally as low.

Nothing compares to winning a hard fought election.

I still have some unopened champagne in my trunk....

Yeah (8.00 / 2)
Labor saw Manuel Perez as having the best chance to win in the fall.  This really is a seat we can win and it was important that we had our best general election candidate in the drivers seat.  Same deal with Marty Block.

Here is the local paper's latest (0.00 / 0)
The Desert Sun's article starts out updated, but (currently) retains last night's uncertain outcome at the conclusion.  Weird.

A day after Manuel Perez's victory in the Democratic nod for the 80th Assembly District race, his Republican opponent, Gary Jeandron, said it was too early to talk strategy.

"There's no reason to make those decision's today. We'll just sit back and let the dust settle," said Jeandron, who ran unopposed for the Republican nod.

He did take a few first shots at his new opponent, however, attributing much of Perez's win to "outside money and outside interest."

"(Greg) Pettis had a lot of the local Democrats but you can't compete with outside money like that," Jeandron added.

Perez countered that he was "proud to have had the support of everyday workers."

"I'm surprised that Gary's even starting. It's too soon," Perez said. "Aside from that, I'm proud to have had the support of the common man, the common woman, the working class."

Said Jeandron, "I'm looking forward to a spirited debate on the issues."

Perez took 6,951 votes to Greg Pettis' 5,160, according to tallies from the Riverside and Imperial Counties' Registrars of Voters. Richard Gonzales took a close third, with 5,003 votes. Gonzales also won a majority of the Imperial County vote.
