CA-12: Connecticut for Lieberman vs. Jackie Speier?

by: Bob Brigham

Wed Jan 16, 2008 at 09:21:35 AM PST

You have to be a complete fool to claim to be a Democrat and then package in your campaign trial balloon a prepared statement of praise from Joe Lieberman.  Anyone you has been paying any attention knows that is the kiss of death in Democratic politics, especially in a blue seat in a major blue geographic area effectively serviced by mass transit. I'm surprised we haven't seen any quotes (yet) from Dan Gerstein.

I don't have a problem with people who worked for Lieberman running for office, but there needs to be an apology right off the bat so voters recognize that the candidate has learned the errors of their ways and is willing to take responsibility all those who have suffered due to their support for Bush's main man in the senate.

But that isn't the route Yul Kwon (CA for Leiberman) is taking. Nope, he seems to think Lieberman praising him makes him look good (like Bush, or like Brownie during his confirmation). That just isn't the case. Speier v Yee would have been a hard fought but fair campaign. Yet anyone running on the Connecticut for Lieberman ticket in the Bay Area should expect far, far worse.

UPDATE: Even one of our friends at the California Majority Report agrees that, "being a former Lieberman staffer doesn't really win one a lot of friends in the Democratic Party."

survivor vs. Survivor (8.00 / 1)
I imagine a Speier campaign against Lantos would have put her as the fresh face against yesterday's Democratic party.  I imagine a Speier campaign against Kwon could be won with dismissiveness: "Oh yah?  He survived a TV show?  Oh, that's pretty cool, yah.  Yah, you know what I survived?"

Although I'm sure Speier is too tactful and nice to actually go that route.  But that's my little Speier-is-a-badass fantasy, anyway.

that will totally be the narrative (0.00 / 0)
I think we will see some serious Joementum in the "survivor on TV vs. survivor in Guyana" frame.

Speier may be too tactful and nice, (0.00 / 0)
but I'm not! Speier will surely win on her own merit, but I can't resist this narrative - you can't make this stuff up.

Seems like this is the typical situation where you arrange to have some proxy make the connection for you, thus allowing you to keep looking tactful and nice.  And you're definitely right that you couldn't come up with a bigger cognitive gift to the Speier campaign than that coincidence, which should serve to essentially remind every voter of Speier every time they see Kwon.

i was wondering (0.00 / 0)
I know that Jackie's the frontrunner and I'm glad because I think she'd be a good member of Congress. But I was wondering who, if anyone would run besides her.

I don't know that this guy is much of a real threat, but at the same time, plenty of other people have coveted this seat as 'theirs' as well and feel they have a right to it (funny how they forget us voters in all that).

it was not that long ago (early 90s) when we had an open seat on the peninsula and it was a bit of a bruiser.

With Yee not running... (0.00 / 0)
...I really can't think of anyone who could mount a serious challenge to Speier.  Nevin & Papan (Yee's primary challengers from '06; the State Senate district and Congressional district are fairly contiguous) are not well known outside their local bases.  Lantos has not had a serious challenger in recent memory. Ro Khanna took a decent run at him in 2004 and got maybe 20 or 25% in the primary.  He might run again, but Speier has a good donaor base from her LG run and is still very well known here in the district.

While I wouldn't support him for this election, I do think it's good that we have capable young Democrats who are looking at running for office.  He got an positive statement from Lieberman because he worked for Lieberman (pre-2006).  I certainly wouldn't count that against him.
