Dirty Tricksters Caught on Video

by: Erik Love

Wed Nov 21, 2007 at 15:29:05 PM PST

(Caught on film - promoted by jsw)

I took a video camera up to UCSB and found some folks luring students in with "help us cure cancer" when in fact one of their petitions is the so-called "Electoral College Reform Act" -- a blatant attempt to steal the White House in 2008.

See the Courage Campaign YouTube here, and then send this on to your friends.  Tell them to keep their eyes peeled for dirty tricksters when they go shopping this weekend. If you encounter a petitioner trying to trick you with a line about "children with cancer," then click here to report when and where you saw the dirty tricksters.

Last week, University of California student Steven Attewell discovered a team of petitioners on the university campus at Santa Barbara.  After discovering that the petitioners were trying to get signatures for the Dirty Trick Act, Mr. Attewell immediately contacted the Courage Campaign to help shine a spotlight on these illegal tactics.  The following day, we found the petitioners using their deceptive tactics to get signatures from unsuspecting college students.  And we had a video camera.

Erik Love :: Dirty Tricksters Caught on Video
As you can see in the video, the petitioners said that their petition would "help children with cancer," and then proceeded to instruct well-meaning students to sign several petitions that were attached together on a single clipboard.  The petitioners clearly tried to obscure the language on the petitions, using a rubber band to make it difficult for anyone signing to read beyond the first page.  When pressed, the petitioners described some of the other issues (besides curing cancer) they were advocating, but their descriptions of the petition language on eminent domain and presidential election reform was unclear or inaccurate.

According to an investigation from the UCSB Daily Nexus, the petitioners in Santa Barbara said that they work for Arno Political Consultants (APC), a notorious Republican consulting firm which has previously contracted to get signatures for tobacco companies, Mobil Oil, and they've been discovered tricking people into registering to vote as a Republican. APC has been in courts all over America, as you can see here.

APC said that their corporation bears no responsibility for the tactics seen in Santa Barbara, and that any violations of election law are the fault of the individual signature-gatherers in Santa Barbara.  This seems unlikely as reports are flowing in from across the state of APC petitioners using similar deceptive tactics used to get signatures on the Dirty Trick Initiative.

If you see anyone collecting signatures for the Dirty Trick, let us know right away by visiting CourageCampaign.org/sneaky.  Send us your video, your photos and your stories; we'll post them and we'll offer them up when it comes time to challenge the process.

Great job, Erik (0.00 / 0)
Thanks for your patience with me today and my "one more things" ;-)

Also, congrats on the #1 diary in Kossackistan. I had a number one as well... way back in the day when I did some blogging for Working Assets.

If anyone sees any sneaky signature-gathering shenanigans over the weekend, please post 'em here or on the Courage Campaign landing page.

We'll be sure to report everything to Sec. Bowen's office.

I didn't see anything illegal on tape (1.00 / 3)
But, I have a different viewpoint on the initiiative as well.  California's current 'winner-take-all" system is not fair by making up to half our votes irrelevant in Presidential elections.  This initiative will replace "winner-take-all" with a proportional system already used in several other states.  It will make sure every vote counts and will guarantee every candidate wins his or her fair share of electoral college votes from California.

This initiative is NOT about helping any one party or candidate -- I understand you like the current system because it does help one party -- the initiative simply ensures that every vote cast in our state counts in the Electoral College.  Why are you against that?

In 1988, Democratic nominee Michael Dukakis received 48% of the vote, but received ZERO electoral delegates from California.

In 2004, Republican nominee George Bush received 44% of the vote, but received ZERO electoral delegates from California.

It has been over 30 years since presidential candidates have actively sought the votes of Californians.  Without this reform initiative, they will all take us for granted again in 2008.  In the last presidential election in California, over 5.5 million voters cast a ballot for someone other than the winner.  That's more votes than were cast for the winning candidate in any of the 49 other states, yet every one of the 5.5 million ballots was wasted under the current unfair winner-take-all system.

how about (0.00 / 0)
we just let our congressmen do our voting for us? because that is the effect...

Not at all (0.00 / 0)
Especially if the same proportional system was adopted in EVERY State -- what could possibly be wrong with that?

You're trolling (8.00 / 3)
You just copied the text of Darrell Issa's fundraising letter for the initiative, seen here: http://www.californi...

Go troll on another site, clown.

I added my own spin (1.00 / 1)
Nevertheless, was there anything UNTRUTHFUL to Issa's fundraising letter for the initiative?

[ Parent ]
uh yeah, it is about won side winning (8.00 / 1)
I love the fact that you had to go back 20 years to find a time when the GOP was competitive, face it, voters in California don't trust the GOP and that is why there is the dirty tricks initiative in the first place.

Bonus points for the cover of the envelope with the Hillary Doesn't Want You to Open This graphic.

Desperation indeed.

Happy Thanksgiving, everyone.

Great job, Erik! (8.00 / 1)
I was hoping we would have a place to aggregate all this info. I'm planning on hitting 5 Target Stores on Friday... camera and voice recorder in hand.

Get Lawbreaking on Camera (0.00 / 0)
This is a good start, but there are certainly other teams of signers out there who are undeniably committing crimes that could be caught on hidden camera.  The effort should be made there.  This video doesn't prove without a doubt that these guys are breaking the law -- that's what we need to disrupt them and make this story go big.

They have to knowingly mislead people as to the purpose of the initiative, and simply having rubberbanded petitions doesn't in itself constitute a crime - if you can lift them up to read the initiative summary, then it's not illegal (at least according to the Sec of State investigator I spoke with last Friday).  (If I missed any clear cut lawbreaking on the tape, let me know)

If Courage Campaign folks don't want to get personally involved in this kind of sting operation, just hire a private investigator to get these teams of signers on tape breaking the law -- I'd be happy to donate to fund such an endeavor.

I really want to see this all over CA television news in the next couple days, and all that's necessary to make that happen is good video.  I'm in for $100 to make that happen.

There's no downside to making such an effort public -- either we catch these guys in the act and disrupt their operation that way, or we scare them off from their most aggressive tactics and slow them down that way.

As encouragement, I'll put my $ where my mouth is: I'm in for $250 to Courage Campaign if they initiate this effort by Saturday (no time to waste!)

If I can get a contact for Courage Campaign to discuss this with, I'd be happy to talk to you and let you know I'm quite serious.

Bad editing (0.00 / 0)
I forgot to chop out a paragraph in the middle there:  To be clear, I'm in for $250.  I had originally written $100 but changed my mind when I considered how much I want this to happen and forgot to cut out that paragraph. It's a much greater sacrifice on my end financially, but it's really important to make this happen, and though I'm not in a position to do the sting myself (I don't have the equipment or know where these guys are gathering sigs), I can help fund it, and that's how I'd like to contribute.

Please guys, done in a methodical and deliberate way, we could get lots of benefits from this, including even disrupting them enough to keep them from qualifying enough signatures.  Getting some of these guys convicted and making this effort turn into an unmitigated black eye for Republican statewide and nationally would be excellent too, no?  Articles in the NYT about complaints that signature gatherers are offering food to homeless to get signatures is nice, but it boils down to claims of wrongdoing.  You can't deny crimes on video - that's what we have to get, and not to be an annoying ass about this, but we need it NOW.

Thank you, Pete. (0.00 / 0)
As a "netroots-driven organization to empower the grassroots," we're getting some excellent information from our members, from bloggers and from grassroots activists.

And, we will be taking action, based on that bottom-up feedback -- including your feedback.

Stay tuned.

And keep the ideas coming...

the words I'd like to see (6.50 / 2)
caught on tape are, "sign the multiple copies"... that's the phrase, combined with the rubber band that obscures the text, that needs to be captured.
