Rally Monday - Save KLSD - San Diego Progressive Talk Radio

by: AlanF

Sat Aug 25, 2007 at 08:44:42 AM PDT

[cross-posted at Daily Kos -- any suggestions for other CA/San Diego blogs would be welcome]

I've been posting on progressive talk radio a fair amount this year, focusing on the efforts of our Boston group to buy a station as a solid home for progressive talk. Relying on the kindness of Clear Channel and similar media behemoths, as we have discovered, doesn't work.

While we're making good progress (hey, we're progressives, after all), many stations across the country are still dependent on the whims of these media giants.

Now San Diego's KLSD (yup, that's the real name) is in trouble. This is a call to action, not an extensive analysis, so much of the content comes from the SaveKLSD.com website. If I have a chance, I'll update it later. Thanks to NonStopRadio.com and Daily Kos member rougegorge for alerting me.

AlanF :: Rally Monday - Save KLSD - San Diego Progressive Talk Radio
The key information:

Gather at 7:30 a.m. Monday, August 27th outside of Clear Channel's San Diego's headquarters: 9660 Granite Ridge Dr., San Diego, CA 92123

The only liberal/progressive broadcast media outlet in San Diego County is about to be shut down.

Clear Channel, who owns KLSD 1360 AM, is in the process of switching the liberal talk format to yet another Sports Talk station. We need our voice in media - and you can help. ...

There will be two gatherings, both outside of Clear Channel's offices at 9660 Granite Ridge Drive, San Diego, CA 92123 .

The first meeting will be to help organize the big rally. All interested individuals and groups, who are willing to work on this issue, should meet on Saturday, August 25th at 9:00am. At 10:00am we will announce the specific plans for the big rally on Monday.

Will be updated later.

San Diegans, please come to the rescue, and let those of us around the country know how we can help!

Good luck, San Diego! (5.00 / 1)
Let us know how we can help.

Thanks AlanF (5.00 / 2)
for posting about this. I've been too busy working on it to add anything here! I've been writing about it on my blog the last few days, and helping to organize a big show of support on Monday.

The SaveKLSD yahoo group has been amazing. Talk about your small group of dedicated individuals! In no time at all signs were made, flyers were printed, letters were sent, and large groups of people were invited to Monday's rally at the station.

There is now also a petition you can sign to show your support.

The thing that just galls me about this is that there are THREE right wing talk radio stations in San Diego. You can hear Rush, O'Reilly, Dr Laura, Michael Savage, ad nauseum around here. There is exactly ONE station with a progressive format in the area, and they're going to turn that over to FOX Sports.

These are OUR airwaves that are to be used for the public good, and this ain't good. We need a diversity of public voices for a vibrant democracy and an educated electorate. Democracy will fail if diverse public opinion is not enabled and allowed.

I was watching Bill Moyer's Journal last night where he discussed this very issue of media consolidation, and FCC Commissioner Michael Copps was being interviewed. He said something that I think is so important, but we forget it all the time. When it comes to public airwaves, the stockholders are indeed important, but the American people are the STAKEHOLDERS and we are MORE important. Maintaining open discussion and diversity of opinion is much more important. To get their license renewals, stations used to have to apply every three years and prove they were acting in the public interest. Now they just send in their little license renewal postcard and it's done. Enough of that, sez I. We need to start demanding media reform regarding the use of our airwaves.

In the meantime, sign the petition or show up at the station on Monday at 7:30 if you want to keep liberal talk radio in San Diego.

I posted that information (0.00 / 0)
as an update to my diary on Daily Kos. Thanks, and good luck!

Clear Channel doesn't want it to succeed (5.00 / 1)
They do not do much of anything to promote the station -- no billboards, newspaper ads, Tv ads -- nothing!

Also, the advertisers they target are not a good fit for progressive listeners (law firms, credit unions, insurance companies).  They really need to go after smaller, local businesses (like restaurants) that progressives would be more likely to frequent.

I hope we can get a huge turnout for the rally on Monday!

This was a basic flaw in the Air America business model (0.00 / 0)
-- one that we saw with the CLEC/ILEC wars in the late 1990's.

You can't rely for your infrastructure on people who want to destroy you.

Ads for environmentally friendly cars (0.00 / 0)
are also a good fit for progressive listeners.
