Time for a Progressive Revolt in the Senate

by: Brian Leubitz

Fri Jul 20, 2007 at 08:43:48 AM PDT

UPDATE: SpeakOut California has an action alert setup which will allow you to send a letter to the Governator, and your legislators.  Please do so here. Please. Pretty Please. Also, I added this sentence to the second paragaph: "Furthermore, we do not need to repay a billion of debt early just to appease Wall Street if that means slashing public transportation programs."

One more piece real quick here on the budget. As Frank mentioned in a comment to Bob's first post on the budget, the Assembly has adjourned for 30 days. This leaves the Senate with few choices on the budget with exception, as Frank put, for sweeteners for Senate Reps. But, in my book, it's time for some Progressive Senators to threaten withholding their votes on this plan. The VooDoo Economics goes too far. At the very least, let's attempt to get some money back for public transit. So, Progressive Senators Migden, Kuehl, Corbett, Cedillo, I'm looking directly at you. It's time to move the center of the discussion three steps to the left.

Absolutely. (0.00 / 0)
Because if holding one's breath and turning blue until the other side gives in is how budgets in CA are to be negotiated, then the Senate Democrats should step up and take a turn. Why should they let the Republicans dictate terms from the minority?

That's my feeling (0.00 / 0)
And of course, let's talk about getting another ballot proposition about removing the 2/3 requirement on the budget.

I'm proud to work for Kamala Harris for AG, but my opinions are entirely my own.

Um, yeah. (0.00 / 0)
Hopefully Dems will start to see that without getting rid of the 2/3 requirement, they'll never be able to govern effectively. They're currently fixated on the term limits reform, but not only is the 2/3 rule more important, if it's still there, their extended terms aren't going to be any more successful.

I can't wait (8.00 / 1)
For campaign ads lining up everyone screwed by this budget. Might need to be a full two minutes, but it'll be worth it.

I proudly work to re-elect Barbara Boxer

We should fix the insane 2/3rds requirement (8.00 / 1)
We need the constitution fix, it's completely insane. But in the meantime we should crank up the 58 county strategy and put a two thirds Democratic majority in the Assembly and the Senate. I'm sick of this crap.

Also, money for public transit is hardly moving things to the left: there is massive, overwhelming support for a) the environment and b) traffic reduction from all over the center and big chunks of the right.

I'm the project director and statewide organizer for California VoterConnect.

And as the LA Times noted in their article (0.00 / 0)
One of the projects hurt by the $1 billion cut is widening of Interstate 5 between the Orange County line and the 605. While I believe we should be building rail and expanding bus service instead of widening freeways, it validates your point that these cuts hurt all Californians, and anger at them will cross political lines.

As to 2/3, I think we need to be seeking a repeal of the 2/3 clause AND 2/3 majorities in both houses so as to be able to overcome a Republican governor.

I was reading over the most recent voter registration stats earlier this morning, and noting that my senate district, the 15th, has more registered Democrats than Republicans and yet we've been represented by Republican Abel Maldonado since 2002. He's termed out next year, as are folks like Tom McClintock! and Dick Ackerman. Although their districts are more Republican than the 15th, we only need two more Senate seats to hit the magical number of 27.
