Progressives Forfeit, Gavin Newsom Re-Elected by Default

by: Bob Brigham

Sat Jun 02, 2007 at 17:03:25 PM PDT

Ouch. Talk about anti-climatic. Speech after speech on how it is critical to challenge Gavin Newsom and elected after elected unwilling to run. It was surreal.

(more after the jump)

Bob Brigham :: Progressives Forfeit, Gavin Newsom Re-Elected by Default
The last two speakers were Ross Mirkarimi and Chris Daly. The huge crowd was chanting "Run Ross Run" and interrupted his speech on multiple occasions for the chant. Yet he said he wouldn't run. An audience member challenged him, yet he still wouldn't run.

Then Daly got up, talked about how crucial it was and told the story of the Golden State Warriors and held up his 'I Believe' sign. Just when it seemed he was ready to announce, he said something like "we'll get it done" and just walked of the stage while "I need a Hero" played and everyone looked at the people next to them in disbelief. It really was surreal. I mean, WTF?

Everyone should now realize Daly was right a full month ago when he said a candidate would have needed to announce two weeks ago to have a chance. That didn't happen, it didn't happen today and the whole ordeal was nothing but comedy.

OK, it was more than comedy, there was great networking and important plotting on lots of issues. And Supervisor Jake McGoldrick gave a thunderous speech to kick of his campaign against the fringe group trying to recall him.

It is probably time for people to realize Newsom is going to be mayor for 4 1/2 more years and adjust strategy accordingly. Progressives need to focus on the legislative branch and the ballot box. And on those fronts there were some great conversations today.

But overall, it ended with a huge letdown. It was like being at a concert with lead guitar just wailing out a solo and right at the crescendo the sound system blows.

UPDATE: This morning's paper:

Tired of waiting for candidates to decide whether to take on the mayor -- whose own re-election campaign is chugging along -- Supervisor Chris Daly called for a convention, taking place today, to find a challenger.

But whether any of the better-known progressives will announce their candidacy at the Tenderloin meeting is unknown, and Daly said if no one else does by the end of the day, he will.

"Much to my wife's chagrin," added Daly, who said anyone who wants a realistic chance of beating Newsom needs to start campaigning now.

Forfeit, indeed.

Again, here's a (partial, probably incomplete) list of the bloggers in attendance and whose sites you should visit for more commentary:

Sasha, Luke Thomas and Elaine Santore, H. Brown, Pat Murphy, Paul Hogarth, Gavin Watch (assumed), Chris Daly, SF Mike, SF Party Party, Poor Magazine, Greg Dewar, Josh Wolf, Tim Redmond, Rita

You sound so disappointed (0.00 / 0)
But frankly this sounds shockingly practical for the SF Progressives, which usually have their heads in the clouds (or firmly up their asses). It sounds like they are focussing on a real agenda, not just one election.

If only the DNC would use this tactic!

Correction: I read your post more closely. You are bitching about the fact that they ARE focussed on one election, rather than a real agenda. Sigh... you are SO right.

I'm still in disbelief (0.00 / 0)
Philosophically, I hate uncontested elections. Politicians are elected to a term, not the maximum number of terms.

But the pragmatist in me realizes that there is a progressive majority on the Board and this is a progressive city. Newsom has shown a willingness to co-opt good ideas, so I'd really like to see a focus on aggressive policy.

And as somebody who views politics as a great spectator sport, I'm disappointed. San Francisco mayoral races are as exciting as they come.

that's why I didn't stick around (0.00 / 0)
without any "news" there was not much to "cover" so I took off. But I did take a few photos including some of those "deep thoughts" posted all over the school...the one on "excuses" seemed appropriate.

these "coronations" we give to politicians ensures that they don't respond to real peoples' needs. The latest from the Mayor suggests that MUNI is all fine and good. Guess they don't have to worry now that the progressives let him off the hook.

progressives have no stick, Daly was bluffing (0.00 / 0)
Any realistic chance of trying the carrot?

Don't throw in the towel yet (0.00 / 0)
Here's an alternate interpretation: another candidate (most likely either Matt Gonzalez or Art Agnos) will enter the race but isn't ready to declare their candidacy yet. Daly and Mirkarimi would defer to them. If there wasn't another candidate in the works, Daly or Mirkarimi would have jumped in. Today was a show of force. 15 respected elected officials who are ready to campaign against Gavin Newsom.

And about the long-term strategy of San Francisco progressives, that was actually the good news of the convention. Next year, progressive will have three Supervisor seats to protect: Districts 1, 3, and 11. After today we have strong progressive candidates in two of those races: School Board member Eric Mar is running in District 1 (the Richmond). And John Avalos, aide to Chris Daly and head of the San Francisco People's Organization will run in District 11 (the Excelsior). San Francisco's progressive bench is stocked.

Keep an eye on Gavin Newsom.

That was how I read it as well (0.00 / 0)
Daly and Mirkarimi deferring to one of the two progressive Hamlets still out there.

I agree with blogswarm about the importance of finding a challenger to Newsom (a few weeks back I found myself agreeing with Paul Hogarth that this wasn't necessary, but I've come around on that point). And I like that a Progressive Convention was indeed held, creating an organizational impetus for future years.

You can check out any time you like but you can never leave

Eric Mar is pretty darn cool (0.00 / 0)
I'm pretty confident that he'll be a great supe. I like the chances of SF Progressives maintaining the veto-proof majority. 2010 should solidify the progressive voting bloc.

I'm proud to work for Kamala Harris for AG.
