Call Congress to THANK THEM for Saving Trestles!!

UPDATE: I just got off the phone with one of Loretta Sanchez's DC staffers, and he gave me the good news. The Davis Amendment passed, along with HR 1585! We're one step closer to saving Trestles for good. And yes, Loretta DID vote for the amendment! : )

Remember what I said yesterday about Susan Davis' amendment to the Defense Authorization bill that would require TCA to comply with state and federal laws in extending the 241 Toll Road? Well, the amendment has come up for a vote TODAY... And we won! Now we know that TCA's preferred route for the Foothill-South 241 Extension would rip through and destroy the last great stretch of coast in Southern California. We also know that the Foothill-South 241 Extension would do nothing to relieve traffic, and it would totally violate the law.

Basically, we know that this proposed toll road to Trestles is a total waste of our time and money... And now, we know that our representatives in Washington do as well. We need to thank all our Democrats on the Armed Services Committee who voted for this timely amendment. Follow me after the flip to find out how you can thank House Armed Service Committee members for doing what's best for ALL OF US in Southern California...

That is fantastic news! Kudos to Susan Davis for authoring the amendment and to the House for passing it. Is the TCA going to continue to try to shove the 241 extension down our throats or are they going to do the smart thing and at least find another route?

I can't see how Foothill-South continues... (0.00 / 0)

As TCA currently wants it if Congress ultimately passes HR 1585, and Bush is forced to sign it (It IS DEFENSE MONEY, after all!) into law. Since TCA would then be required by the Navy (as directed by Congress) to comply with state and federal environmental laws, their current plan to extend the 241 through San Onofre to Trestles just couldn't continue. They'd HAVE TO look at better plans.

One plan that I like is to connect the 241 to the 73 Toll Road and 5 Freeway at the 5/73 Interchange in Laguna Niguel/Mission Viejo. This would actually TAKE FOLKS IN SOUTH COUNTY TO WHERE THEY WANT TO GO IN OC! It would connect South County to where the jobs, restaurants, beaches, sports teams, and other attractions are actually at in Irvine, Huntington Beach, Santa Ana, and Anaheim. Their current plan is just a stupid road to nowhere in San Diego County.

And oh yes, we also need a long-term plan to expand Metrolink service in the area. And ultimately, we need light rail for Orange County. In time, we'll have it all.

But in the meantime, I'm glad that this toll road boondoggle is finally going down. It destroys one of the last wild stretches of coast in SoCal, and it does ABSOLUTELY NOTHING to ease OC traffic. Kudos to Susan Davis and all the Dems who voted for her good amendment! : )
