Guess Who Also Cares About Climate Change in OC?

by: Andrew Davey (atdleft)

Sun Apr 15, 2007 at 16:18:41 PM PDT

(Cross-posted at The Obama OC Grassroots Blog : ) - promoted by atdleft)

OK, so just found out about what happened at the Day of Climate Action in Huntington Beach yesterday. Well, the marchers weren't the only ones in HB to talk about climate change. Obama OC Grassroots also made its presence known at the pier yesterday as local grassroots activists registered new voters, talked about the many challenges facing us regarding climate change, and how Barack Obama is ready to lead on finding real solutions.

Follow me after the flip to find out more about what happened after the rally...
And, of course, for more pictures! ; )

Andrew Davey (atdleft) :: Guess Who Also Cares About Climate Change in OC?

As the rally was getting started at Pier Plaza, the Obama Grassroots team was setting up a table. And as soon as the march began, Team Obama stayed at the pier to register voters and answer any questions about Barack Obama, the grassroots campaign in Orange County, and what he plans to do about climate change should he be elected as our 44th President. Even though the gloomy clouds were beginning to roll in from the Pacific, it was all smiles for Team Obama!

We had a couple of people come up to the table to fill out voter registration forms. Whether or not they had made their decision yet on Obama, we wanted to give them a chance to engage in the democratic process. Now we had plenty more people come up to the table to ask us about where Obama stands on the issues. They wanted to know about how Obama plans to tackle climate change, meet America's future energy needs, clean up all the corruption in government, and end the Iraq War. We answered all their questions as best as we could, and most were quite surprised to learn about all that Obama has done on these issues. It never ceases to amaze me how people come to like and respect Obama once they learn about all that he's actually done on all these issues.

We were all pleasantly surprised to hear from local progressives who are as wowed about Obama and all is accomplishments as we were. Of course, we were also surprised to hear from previously apathetic folks who are suddenly excited about politics and the state of the nation again because of Barack Obama and his message of hope, action, and change. And yes, we were heart-warmed to see local environmentalists smile in delight once we showed them that Obama is not just providing rhetoric about climate change, our energy future, and the state of our planet...
He's actually doing something about it now!

Perhaps this is what I like most about our Obama OC Grassroots team, and about Senator Barack Obama. It's not about empty rhetoric, but it is about real action. It's not about wishful thinking, but it is about real hope for real change. : )

I tend to prefer the north side of the pier (8.00 / 1)
But hanging out at Huntington Beach sounds like way too much fun to be politics.

Well, it certainly makes local politics fun! (0.00 / 0)
I mean, I had a great time yesterday! It was great to see my friends at OCICE and DFA rally and march for action on climate change, and it was EVEN BETTER to go up to Pier Plaza and talk to folks about Obama, climate change, and the election. There's NEVER a shortage of colorful characters at the Surf City Pier, and political events always seem more fun when we get to hang out with all the gnarly surfer dudes and dudettes. I guess it's just another reason why I love OC. ; )

And oh yes, I like both sides of the pier. The views are better on the south side, but the scenery always seems to be livelier and more fun on the north side. I guess either way, you're in for a treat. : )

the south side makes sense for tabling (8.00 / 1)
OK, I'm talking out my ass on this and have zero reason to be believed, but if I were lucky enough to surf at Huntington tomorrow I'd start out on the north side of the pier (especially this time of year).

But the parking lot situation south of the pier primes it for politics.

today's your lucky day (0.00 / 0)
you're totally right that the north side of the pier is more popular for surfing. however for tabling and protests, it's actually best to be right at the entrance to the pier at the corner of pch and main. that's where the climate change rally began, the climate march began, and where obama oc settled for voter reg and outreach tabling. we usually get everyone, from the surfer "regulars" to the throngs of tourists, right there at pier plaza.

so when did you last visit our fabulous sun-kissed beaches in oc? you seem to know your stuff about surf city. : )

I love Huntington Beach (8.00 / 1)
I grew up in Montana, but every summer for as long as I could remember I spent a couple weeks at Huntington Beach (visiting family). It is one of my favorite places on the face of the earth, I simply love it. The lessons I learned from the waves there I use daily in politics.

Huntington Beach... (8.00 / 1)
...usually has this strange funk in the water that gives me a rash. I prefer San Clemente. Oh how I love that place.

Gotta say though, beautiful pictures. I love the ocean. I will be living about a mile and a half from Monterey Bay come June, I cannot *wait* to be that close to the surf and sand again.

Sounds like it was a good day of tabling, too!

You can check out any time you like but you can never leave

well, laguna's my favorite (0.00 / 0)
yes, you're right about the funky rash... I hate it when I get it. but still, I love the pier and I love the vibe of the beach and of downtown. now I must admit that laguna's always been my favorite beach because of its funky, artsy vibe as well as its pristine beaches and perfect diving/swimming spots... however hb is a very close second for me. after all, where else can I capture all these picture-perfect moments? : )

the last shot in this diary (8.00 / 1)
Is now my desktop, such a magical place and a great shot -- thanks!

glad that you like it! (0.00 / 0)
you should see all the hundreds of beach pics stored on my laptop... it's just ridiculous! I guess i'll always feel so fortunate to live so close to all this majestic beauty. and I guess i'll always feel obligated to chronicle what may be the most unbelievably gorgeous stretch of coastline on the face of the earth.

but anyways, i'm always happy to share my humble photos of such amazing scenery with others. enjoy! : )

I love all your shots (8.00 / 1)
When the cheap water-proof camera hits the markets, I want the shot you see when you are waiting for a wave, sitting on your board, and looking toward Main.
