Peter Ragone gets a promotion

by: Brian Leubitz

Sat Feb 10, 2007 at 06:01:46 AM PST

In the wake of his sock puppetry on the websites of SFist and ABC7, many have argued that Peter Ragone should be fired (here at Calitics, at BeyondChron and at the SF Bay Guardian).  That didn't happen, and yesterday, Ragone was promoted by new Newsom chief of staff Phil Ginsberg. (h/t Left in SF and SF Bay Guardian.)

Peter Ragone, the mayor's press secretary, gets a new title: director of communications and planning.

"This is all Phil's structure," Ragone said, referring to Ginsberg and describing the moves as routine when a new chief of staff takes over. (SF Chronicle 2/9/07)

So, Ragone uses sock puppets all over the Internet, and then lies to reporters about it, and then gets a promotion?  Throw in the fact that he was also deceptive (some would say lying here too) about the alcohol story, and you have a "director of communications and planning" that reporters don't trust.  But sure, why not promote him?

Ginsberg's first mistake is huge (8.00 / 1)
This might have made sense when Ginsberg began planning the restructuring, but pretending that Ragone didn't lose all credibility makes Ginsberg look like he doesn't get it.

Yeah, It just doesn't seem the wisest course (8.00 / 1)
Certainly if you really, really wanted to give him a promotion (why??), you would wait a few weeks. He's lost credibility, told the press that Newsom was a liar, and lied to the face of reporters.  Rock on!

And, oh, by the way, Newsom's having the grand opening of his campaign office on Sunday.

I think?

Newsom also lost his only online supporter (8.00 / 1)
Even Pat Murphy is outraged:

Properly, Mayor Gavin Newsom should fire Ragone, as no mayor can remain connected to a lie -- a lie all the more wounding as it came from Newsom's primary spokesman.

The Sentinel no longer will receive information, will not receive press releases, will not receive phone calls from anyone in the mayor's press office as long as Peter Ragone leads it.

Until Ragone goes, what would be the point?

I'm sure the grand opening will be a blast. Four years ago, the point of the open house was to, "meet the campaign team" (hey, who wrote that email). With Tourk out, it looks like the point this time is to see the building.

Mesh Magazine is also suggesting Newsom fire Peter Ragone

No way will they fire Ragone (0.00 / 0)
Losing Alex Tourk was a big blow to the reelection campaign. And since Newsom and his handlers have decided to forge ahead with that campaign, they can't afford to lose someone so central to the operation as Ragone.

Personally I think Ragone should resign and Newsom should finish his term but not run for reelection. Since neither will happen, we'll have to see who opposes Newsom in the fall election.
