Assembly Approves Marriage Equality (Again)

by: Andrew Davey (atdleft)

Tue Jun 05, 2007 at 19:34:44 PM PDT

(Now with video. - promoted by Brian Leubitz)

THE STATE ASSEMBLY JUST APPROVED MARRIAGE EQUALITY ONCE AGAIN!

But anyways, as I was starting to feel happy that the Assembly approved legislation that would allow me to find the hubby of my dreams, Chuckie just had to piss me off by saying this. Whatever. All I say to him, and to others who oppose equal rights for all, is that allowing all loving couples to make lasting commitments for life strengthens marriage. Discrimination doesn't.

Families worrying about what to eat weakens families, and marriages at that. Families worrying about where to live weakens families, and marriages at that. Families worrying about health care weakens families, and marriages at that. If Chuckie DeVore really cares about families and marriages, then maybe he should do something about what families are actually worried about.

But enough of Chuckie, let's get back to the good news of today! Fortunately, most Assembly Members don't share the same distorted views as Chuckie. They recognize that the institution of marriage is only strengthened when the state does not discriminate over which loving couples can get married and which ones can't. Thank goodness they did the right thing today. : )

not quite the second year in a row, last was in 2005 (0.00 / 0)
So the key becomes what has changed in the past two years that will allow a signature this year. The answer is that now Democrats are united and the internet has blossomed. Soon we'll be calling on all of you to step up and get this signed into law.

Mark Leno - The Best Choice for Change

But will Arnold sign it? (0.00 / 0)
That's the big question here. And so far, it doesn't look like he'll give us a different answer than he did last time he vetoed the legislation. Dammit, now I feel crappy again. I don't know what we can really do so long as Arnold is Governor. That's why I so wanted a Democratic Governor last year. A Democratic Governor would definitely sign marriage equality into law. I don't think that Arnold will do the same.

So what can we do in the mean time? That's what we have to figure out.

Had enough of the "red county" right-wing crazy-talk bulls***? Well, then come and visit us at The Liberal OC! Yes, there ARE liberals in The OC! : )

Here's what we do... (0.00 / 0)
we amend it so the issue goes on the ballot. Arnold's reluctance to sign it is because he thinks it goes against the voter's will in passing Proposition 22. Leno should just amend it into becoming a ballot proposition

it has nothing to do with Prop 22 (0.00 / 0)
Completely different sections of law.

What we do, is reach out and change as many minds as possible and maybe the governor might be one of those.

Sooner or later we win, let's make it sooner.

I am aware that... (0.00 / 0)
legally they are different sections. However, I cannot blame Arnold for seeing it as a loophole and thereby believing it still goes against the intent of the voters

A ballot initiative? (0.00 / 0)
Really? Well, maybe that's the only way to circumvent Arnold. And perhaps it has a fiat shot of passing, as California voters have warmed up to marriage equality since Prop 22. I'm just afraid that we won't see that happen, and that we might just have to wait until we have a Democratic Governor in 2011 who will do the right thing and sign marriage equality into law.

This is very important news. (0.00 / 0)
One of the main causes of the swing to Democrats, especially among younger voters, is revulsion at the gay bashing politics of the Republican Party. I know a LOT of people who are only casual observers of the political scene who have vowed to never vote Republican again largely because of their attacks on gay rights.

So on those political grounds I am pleased to see the Sacramento Democrats once again doing the right thing on this. Sticking to their guns means that equal marriage will become a reality, sometime between now and 2011.

And of course, equal marriage rights are the proper and fair thing to do.
