Hate Radio In Sacramento

by: David Dayen

Thu Jun 04, 2009 at 16:51:25 PM PDT

This is truly disgusting.

Two radio jocks on KRXQ, a Sacramento, CA, station engaged in a remarkable dialogue about transgender people, in which they advocated violence against transgender children.

Sample quotes:

"If my son, God forbid, if my son put on a pair of high heels, I would probably hit him with one of my shoes. I would throw a shoe at him. Because you know what? Boys don't wear high heels. And in my house, they definitely don't wear high heels."

"You know, my favorite part about hearing these stories about the kids in high school, who the entire high school caters around, lets the boy wear the dress. I look forward to when they go out into society and society beats them down. And they end up in therapy."

We don't have a lot of local media in California, and increasingly, a substantial segment of the population gets their ideas from talk radio outlets like this.  And here's what they're hearing.

If Rob, Arnie, & Dawn in the Morning on KRXQ have one advertiser left within a week, something's wrong.  GLAAD has an action item for this.  According to the comments in this Huffington Post piece, Chipotle and Snapple have already dropped their ad support for the show.  Contact the station's general manager here:

Sponsors (5.00 / 1)
KRXQ has removed their list of sponsors from the net.  Clicking on the link given in the dairy results in a 404 error.

However, I found a Google cache of their sponsor page as of April 19th by searching on "KRXQ" and "293097" (the station's page index).

Here are the advertisers from the cached page just in case it is removed from Google's memory:

Station Ownership (5.00 / 1)
KRXQ is owned by the same company, entercom, that owns KDND 107.9 "The End", also in Sacramento.  You may remember them as they held the "Hold Your Wee For A Wii" contest, which resulted in the death of one contestant in January, 2007.  Link about KDND here.

The Station Manager of KDND at the time was John Geary, most likely the same man who is now the manager of KRXQ.

It seems there is a pattern emerging of irresponsible conduct by the license-holder.  If so, the license holder can lose ALL their licenses.

Entercom owns 90 stations in the United States, including 5 in Sacramento.

I just sent Geary (the GM) this e-mail... (0.00 / 0)
The one thing you had going for yourself is the other morning shows in Reno and Sac suck, so you got many listeners by default.  That was luck.  However, the fact that your staff couldn't apologize for their tasteless comments is what sealed the deal for me.  I'm no longer a listener of the show.  I'm sure you don't care, right?  You all have those high and mighty attitudes; as long as you can keep those in the unemployment line, all the better for you.  This is the beginning of the end for the show, and it was a long time coming.  Of course you don't have to believe me, you'll find out soon enough as advertisers continue dropping one by one.

Sacramento, CA -- AP --

Bank of America, Verizon, Chipotle and other companies have pulled advertising from a Sacramento radio station after talk show hosts referred to transgender people as "freaks" with mental disorders.

During a May 28 show, one of the three hosts on KRXQ's "Rob, Arnie & Dawn" show said he would hit his son with his shoe if he put on high heels. Another said he would tell a boy he was "a little idiot" if he asked to wear a dress.

Officials with Bank of America Corp. and Chipotle Mexican Grill Inc. said Friday their companies pulled advertising because they found the comments offensive.

"We listened to the segment and the follow-up comments, and found it quite difficult to defend," Bank of America spokesman Joe Goode said.

Representatives of Verizon Communications Inc., Nissan Motor Co. and Carl's Jr. restaurants also said they stopped advertising.
