It's Official...I am Running for Governor of California

by: Gavin Newsom

Tue Apr 21, 2009 at 09:16:14 AM PDT

(Well, this seems newsworthy. - promoted by Brian Leubitz)

It's official. Today, I became a candidate for governor because California needs a new direction.

EDITED by Brian: For space. Please see the flip for more.

Gavin Newsom :: It's Official...I am Running for Governor of California
I hope you will join me as we set out to build a campaign that does more than win an election. Together we can create the kind of campaign that changes California.

If you want to help us get off to a strong start, please contribute here.

In San Francisco, we're showing what can be accomplished when we stop looking back and start looking for solutions.

We are the first, and still the only, city in America implementing universal health care. We're proving what you already knew - it is less expensive to keep people well than it is to treat their sicknesses.

Join us and you can help take the fight for excellent and affordable health care to all of California.

Across California, teachers are facing layoff notices; but we are protecting teachers from layoffs, raising test scores and breaking down the barriers to a college education.

Contribute today
and we'll build the kind of campaign that can force Sacramento to stop arguing about better schools and start creating them.

The unemployment rate in California is soaring. But in San Francisco, the local economy is doing better because we helped attract new industries and new high-wage jobs. We are working together to grow our economy with a local stimulus plan that will put people back to work, starting with environmental initiatives and green-collar job training programs.

In San Francisco, we've done all of this while balancing our budgets  - and our bond rating has gone up, thanks to sound fiscal management and a rainy day reserve.

Join us, and we'll create the kind of state government that stops searching for someone to blame and starts finding solutions.

The truth is, we can't keep returning to the same old, tired ideas and expect a different result. If we take a new approach, and recognize that we are all in this together, I believe we can put California on a new path toward a better future.

Join us in a new kind of campaign that gives all of us the tools we need to make change. Join us on Facebook, Twitter or at www.GavinNewsom.com. Make your voice heard and help us make real change.

Some of you already know me. You know I am not afraid to stand up and fight for what's right. From quality health care for everyone to equal rights for all Californians, I will do more than talk about problems - I will work with you to solve them.

We all know California can do better.

Let's work together
to set a new direction for California.

Join me on Twitter now. I am taking your questions.

2/3 requirement for budget and taxes (5.00 / 1)
Where do you stand, Mr. Mayor?

"Sound fiscal policy isn't conservative or progressive.... (5.00 / 1)
...it's just common sense."

I can't argue with platitudes like this, but I'm not sure what to do with them either.

What does it mean?  What's the point of emphasizing the city's "rainy day fund" - those specific words, right there in the title of 1A, are meant to sooth the average voter, I take it?

And what if 1A fails, will this phrase then cease to reflect "common sense?" How poll driven and consultant-laden will this campaign be?

Sorry. Watched it again, the platitude is actually "just plain smart"... (0.00 / 0)
...rather than "just common sense."

I have even less of an idea what this stands for.  Does he propose to boldly take a stand on being smart, as opposed to stupid?

Then why doesn't he come out and attack those purveyors of stupid and defunct economic ideologies?

[And what do people think of the dreamy background music?]

Check out his website (4.00 / 2)
http://www.gavinnewsom.com. He wants to get rid of the 2/3 requirement.

[ Parent ]
Hmm... looks like "budget approval" ONLY (not tax!) (5.00 / 1)
This is only the half of the issue...actually less than half:  as others have explained more eloquently, if we can't raise taxes without 2/3 approval, then the only choice on budgeting is cutting spending, whether the approval requirement is 2/3 or 50% or 20% or yomama.

It's a wheedling way of "taking a leadership position" without really taking one.

Happy to be corrected here if I am off base.

He says very clearly (0.00 / 0)
"no option is off the table"

Gavin for Governor (2.00 / 1)
I'm excited for Gavin and support his bid.  My Endorsement can be found: http://natchgreyes.blogspot.co...

Two things I'd like to see (5.00 / 1)
I'd like to know what Gavin and the other gubernatorial candidates have specifically done and are doing to eliminate the 2/3 rules on budget and taxes.  It is no longer enough to simply say you are against it.  People have been "against" it for years, and it's still the law.  Show me how you've fought it, and how you are going to beat it.

Also, I'd like candidates for governor to pledge that they will not sign any budget or tax package that makes the state income tax more regressive than it currently is.  In other words, no more Prop 1As.  When taxes must be raised, let them be raised in a way that maintains the current progressivity of the system.

How about it, Gavin?

Courage (0.00 / 0)
I have a special appreciation for those who stand up for civil rights in the face of political opposition.  Mayor Newsom forsed the issue of gay marriage when so many would have prefered that he think tactically and not make waves.  I am straight, but I feel that when someone else is denied the rights that I enjoy, I am diminished.

Does this mean he is the best choice for Governor?  I'm not sure yet.  But he sure gets a good hard look from me.
