California's Moment: We Can Contribute To The Progressive Wave

by: David Dayen

Tue Oct 14, 2008 at 20:00:00 PM PDT

This Politico story confirms what I've been saying for 18 months - California has a serious opportunity at the state and federal level this November.  The idea that the delegations are somehow fixed is a crutch that defeatist operatives use to explain why they lose year after year.  The truth is that, in a time of financial crisis and economic uncertainty, multiple seats are up for grabs regardless of the district-level makeup (and that's swinging to Democrats as well).  Why else would the NRCC be riding to the rescue of longtime California incumbents?

Darren White and Erik Paulsen were prized Republican recruits, House candidates poised to be the new face of the GOP on Capitol Hill.

But as the two head into the homestretch of their campaigns, GOP operatives say they'll probably have to win - or lose - on their own. The money national Republicans earmarked for White in New Mexico and for Paulsen in Minnesota will likely go instead to protect GOP incumbents who once looked like locks for reelection.

GOP Reps. John B. Shadegg of Arizona, Lee Terry of Nebraska, Henry Brown Jr. of South Carolina and Dan Lungren of California are all fighting for their political lives, a reversal of fortunes that has caught even the most astute campaign observers by surprise.

By the way, the man who gulped the hardest reading those paragraphs was Dean Andal, who will similarly become roadkill for the NRCC as they run screaming from his train wreck of a campaign.

Those "astute" political observers, by the way, haven't been paying attention.  Lungren's CA-03 was clearly the most movable in the state and has been for the entire cycle.  The demographic shifts are identical to CA-11, and the exurbs are exactly the regions that are switching to the Democrats this cycle.  There will be no difference in registration in that seat on Election Day, mark my words.  And other seats are winnable in the state as well.

In California, Republican operatives have noticed some troubling trends.

Two years ago, Lungren - who is completing his seventh term in Congress - beat physician and Vietnam War veteran Bill Durston by 21 points. But the economy has taken its toll, and Lungren's district has one of the highest foreclosure rates in the country. In a newly released Democratic poll, Lungren leads Durston by just 3 percentage points.

Former GOP consultant Allan Hoffenblum said Rep. Dana Rohrabacher and other California Republicans, including Reps. David Dreier and Brian Bilbray, are also at risk.

"The Republican base is not sufficient by itself to elect a Republican in those [California] districts; they still need the independent vote," Hoffenblum said. "In the past decade, they have been reliably voting Republican for president and for Congress. ... There are a lot of angry and scared voters out there. This is not your traditional environment."

After eight years of George Bush, it was NEVER going to be a traditional environment.  People can't stand him, and the economic crisis threw the failures of his Presidency into sharp relief.  Being a Republican is TOXIC in this political milieu.  Ken Calvert in CA-44 is running mailers calling himself "An Independent Voice Working for You."  Ken Calvert!!!  No incumbent with an (R) next to his name is safe, to put it mildly.

So folks, understand that the road to salvation this year does NOT go through the eastern parts of the state and into Nevada to canvass for Barack Obama.  He is going to need a progressive Congress to keep him honest and make sure he exercises bold leadership in dealing with the mess George Bush will leave him.  California needs your ATTENTION.  The progressive wave crested well before hitting the Pacific Ocean in 2006.  We have a half-dozen candidates for Congress, and another half-dozen for the state legislature, that can absolutely win if they have the money and the volunteers to get their message out.  If you want progressive legislation, if you want California's perpetual budget crisis to end, if you want a government that cares about improving people's lives, STAY IN CALIFORNIA and find one of these races.

CA-03: Bill Durston
CA-04: Charlie Brown
CA-26: Russ Warner
CA-45: Julie Bornstein
CA-46: Debbie Cook
CA-50: Nick Leibham
CA-52: Mike Lumpkin

SD-19: Hannah-Beth Jackson

AD-10: Alyson Huber
AD-15: Joan Buchanan
AD-26: John Eisenhut
AD-30: Fran Florez
AD-78: Marty Block
AD-80: Manuel Perez

There are more than this, too.  More on that tomorrow.  You have absolutely no excuse.  Go  find the campaign nearest you and lend them a hand.  We can build that wave as high as we want.

Agree totally (8.00 / 3)
It's time for Californians to attend to their own house. No more trips to swing states - California itself has become a swing state. Races like CA-03, CA-46, the ballot propositions, and the all-important state legislative seats demand all our attention at this point.

amen and then some (8.00 / 2)
Manuel and Julie were at our Democratic rally last Sunday.  Perez precinct walkers covered Palm Springs from 11am to 2pm, then returned for hot dogs, cold drinks, and speeches from Ed Gubman, Obama coordinator for our area, Julie Bornstein, (then a brief break to allow time for)  Karen Bass who introduced Manuel.    John Perez, candidate for an LA Assembly seat, was walking Sunday, too.

Such a good team.  Carlos Gonzalez made some brilliant T-shirts using a campaign photo of Manuel, silk screened in the style of one of the Obama images.  Kind of Andy Warhol thing, I want one.  Now that I'm out of the loop, the cool t-shirts come out.

Union members out in force this weekend, as in others.  Gary Jeandron's latest email says he'll have firefighters and college students walking for him from now until election day, so listen to David, and get over to the Perez campaign office or the Bornstein office.  Call the Democratic HQ in Cathedral City to hook up with the local campaigns:  760-328-9425.

I'm union staff, but not a spokesperson for my union - all posts represent my views solely.

You are spot on (8.00 / 4)
I couldn't agree more.  Perhaps I'm a bit biased, but I think that we could really clean house here at home.  I believe Obama is going to pull off NV with the increased Dems in Clark County.

Instead of driving through CA-03 on your way to Reno, just take I-80 to Madison Ave and turn Right for 4.7 miles.  Then take a Right at Sunrise Blvd for 1.7 miles.  You'll see our Obama / Durston office on the left.

While you walk for Durston, you can hand out lit for Huber or Buchanan and help us take an Assembly seat at the same time!

It's a great day trip for you Bay Area folks...

Cheers,
Bill

Safe seats (8.00 / 2)
No incumbent with an (R) next to his name is safe, to put it mildly.

I think there are some safe (R) Senate seats. I mean, gee! One third of the Senate isn't up for election. ;^)

No safe Republican seats, even in Orange County's 35th SD (8.00 / 3)
I'm the Democratic Candidate for State Senate in California's 35th SD, which is all of western OC from Dana Point to the LA County line, as well as lots of inland cities including, among others, Irvine, Cypress, and Westminster. The district overlaps with Debbie Cook's CA-46 and Steve Young's CA-48 (Go Debbie! Go Steve!) Even in my far-south OC neighborhood the Obama bumper stickers are far outnumbering the McCain-Palin ones. Granted, it makes sense to put the support where it can make the most difference because of the greatest chances, but I'd also like to put in a plug for myself, Ginny Mayer (see www.ginnymayer.com) and my colleague in the 33rd SD, Gary Pritchard. My district is only 45% Republican, with Dems numbering 33% and undeclared voters the rest. It's an uphill battle but we've got a chance so please consider supporting me (as well as my colleagues, Democratic candidates throughout the region.:))

Exactly (8.00 / 2)
Strongly, strongly agree with you. You and Gary are exactly why we need to run candidates hard at every Republican seat. It's the lesson of Howard Dean and 2006 - if you're not running candidates in every seat, you don't benefit from a wave.

As Orange County residents will understand, you can't catch a wave if you're not out there on your board.

Thank you David (8.00 / 1)
These local races are so very important and because so few Democrats are willing to run in Orange County, you have Democrats who have less political ties and the financial means to make their own machine.

I know Obama has proven what can be done and we had someone at a house party tell Gary that if Obama can do it, why can't we?  It's just not the same thing.  There is so much advice but very few people are willing to put their money where their mouths are, that is why it was so important for Gary and I to donate to the local candidates and causes that we care about.

Sure, I'd like to quit my job that is helping pay my mortgage and work on Gary's campaign full time but that's just not reality.  Sure, lets mortgage our house, oh no, we've lost %25 of it's value in the last two years and have negative equity.  It's sad that running is not enough to get Democrats behind you locally, you have to build it yourself and then they come.  It's why admire Debbie Cook so much, Sharon Quirk, the Mayor of Fullerton, and many others who've managed to break through and Republican stronghold.

It is a vicious cycle in the OC, Democrats run and can't get any traction because they don't raise enough and therefore don't deserve local press but then no one can learn about local candidates without the money and local press.  It's mind boggling.
