We Need to Switch to 100% Clean, Renewable Energy

by: Bob Brigham

Tue Aug 12, 2008 at 09:18:54 AM PDT

If you saw the Olympics last night, you might have seen the bold new ad by Al Gore's "We" campaign:

Today, the "We" Campaign launched a new national television ad aimed at promoting the campaign's challenge to repower America -- by generating 100 percent of America's electricity from truly clean sources within 10 years.

The ad, entitled "Switch," (http://www.wecansolveit.org/switch) features Americans of all backgrounds -- rural and urban, blue collar and white collar -- making the change from fossil fuels to cleaner, renewable forms of energy by symbolically "turning on" a giant, 25-foot light switch. Actor William H. Macy narrates the ad.

"America's three great national challenges -- our economy, national security and climate change -- can all be addressed by switching to renewable energy," said Cathy Zoi, CEO of the nonpartisan Alliance for Climate Protection, which is managing the "We" Campaign. "The Olympics are a time for all Americans to reflect on our nation's achievements and what we as a people can do together. Choosing the right path and repowering our nation is something we can do, and something that will benefit us all."

Just as "change" is the key word in this election and mistaking the mood of the electorate helped cost Hillary Clinton and her supporters the nomination, the key word for the next cycle is likely to be "switch" and misjudging the electorate will have the same results.

Bob Brigham :: We Need to Switch to 100% Clean, Renewable Energy
First, watch the ad and join the 1.5 million who have signed on to the campaign:

In the ad narrator Macy notes, "We all know our country faces tough challenges: a weaker economy, soaring gas prices, growing dependence on foreign oil and a worsening climate crisis." He continues, "We can switch to smarter, cleaner forms of power and take advantage of free energy sources like the wind and sun....The answer is simple: power our country with 100 percent clean electricity within ten years."
"Together, we can repower America," the ad concludes. "Together, we can solve the climate crisis."

That message -- Al Gore's message -- is clearly resonating with voters of all persuasions, but especially Democratic Party primary voters and donors. Which is why it makes no sense for San Francisco Mayor Gavin Newsom to oppose the SF Clean Energy Act to switch the city to 100% clean energy.

This is the challenge of our time and history will record those who side with polluters like PG&E against the movement to switch that is growing every day. By the time the Democratic primary heats up, this vote will be as poison as the Iraq War vote (it is no coincidence that the polluters are using the same right-wing tactics the neocons used in their push against the reality-based community).

Yet it is not too late. Every day more and more people are realizing that the time to make the switch is now, the time for bold action is now. Hopefully, Gavin Newsom will have the wisdom to realize the how silly it sounds when he regurgitates PG&E's talking points and will stop and think about what it is Al Gore is saying.

If he needs help, I recommend that his Climate Czar suggest he stop repeating PG&E's misinformation and check out www.WeCanSolveIt.org, because we can. And we will. And we are paying attention to whom 'we' includes.

What did you think of the ad?

the WE campaign is seriously fucking up (8.00 / 1)
From praising John McCain on climate change, to their pathetic call for Pelosi to bring Congress back in session, to featuring Newt Gingrich in an ad and then watching him shove "drill now" down everyone's throat, to their being populated with centrist types (the grassroots and alliance director is a guy who tried to punch you in the face) who have no connection to their allies in the climate space, they have run their campaign 100% wrong.  Stoller is absolutely right.

If you didn't have such a hard-on for tearing down the guy you used to work for you would see that Gore is really awful on the politics here.  This ad is better, but it's just an ad.

if this is bad (0.00 / 0)
Then what does that say about Newsom being very far to the right of even We?

Their messaging is all over the place (0.00 / 0)
Their ad during the Olympics last night was really good, showing a united national effort to power the nation with 100% clean renewables. But you're absolutely right to point out how their earlier "bipartisan" messaging approach is a clusterfuck. Republicans like Newt Gingrich aren't interested in renewables - they are interested in destroying progressive and Democratic politics by using drilling to smash the emerging consensus on moving away from fossil fuels and carbon polluting forms of energy.

Had Gore not been giving the GOP invaluable cover it would have then been easier to unite folks against the "drill now" nonsense that emerged in July, as McCain and folks like Gingrich would never have had any green paint on them to begin with.

Until "WE" understands that beating back the Republicans is the essential first step to producing action on global warming, they're going to be throwing good money at bad strategy.

You can check out any time you like but you can never leave

Maybe if Stoller and the rest of the 'new wave' hadn't spent.... (0.00 / 0)

....so much time on ID politics and put a little more energy into educating the environmental folks, about which he has be properly critical, we'd all be a little closer to being on the same page.

When your preference is to approach politics from the direction of who not what this is what you get. No focus.

Anybody tell me what the progressive agenda is?

Nope, because no such animal exists. We are told vote for so and so because he is 'progressive', loves animals, likes bikes, yadda and yadda not because he intends to pass legislation what would do x, y or z.

This is stupid and until 'we' get over our fantasy that some specific person is gonna be the one to save us.

The Reich will continue to beat our limited amount of brains out.

Seriously (0.00 / 0)
If environmental groups can't figure this one out on their own, they're in the wrong business.

Matt Stoller isn't responsible for everyone.

This ad has nothing to do with the local initiative.Which is just as well given all the problems folks here have outlined with it so far.

However, the so called green energy act has no real guarantees. It's just fluffy kittens and puppies-style feel good rhetoric, while the reality is it will not guarantee anything but an attempt to create a public power system in SF. Given how well they run MUNI and the City, I don't know that's a good idea - esp. when they can't guarantee they won't be using nuclear or coal or diesel in the public power system they propose.

you are totally misinformed (0.00 / 0)
It does guarantee clean energy (not coal or diesel or nuclear) and does not mandate public power. And it puts the process under the PUC, which does a fabulous job providing power to city hall and the best water in the world to your tap.

It is sad to see people falling for PG&E's lies.

I'm confused.... (0.00 / 0)
I'm confused....could you show me where in the law it says that it's not a public power intiative? Or maybe explain to me why the Guardian and Bruce Bruggman keep calling it a "public power initiative?"

It's one or the other, so any explanation would be wonderful.

you are confused (0.00 / 0)
It mandates clean energy, if PG&E is the best vehicle, it will be utilized.

go on... (0.00 / 0)
But that's a big if. And still, there's no guarantee the City wouldn't just do what it wants by gaming the system. Look at the TEP at MUNI as an example.

But again I ask - WHY are the people pushing this calling it a PUBLIC POWER initiative?

Are they mis-informed? Or is something else going on? Answers?

the Campaign is pushing CLEAN ENERGY (0.00 / 0)
I'm guessing that the SFBG is assuming PG&E won't be considered the best vehicle for the cheapest way to go green. Considering PG&E isn't even on pace to meet the state's modest benchmarks, has tens of millions to waste on political misinformation, and charges more than the cities with public power, they may be right. But they are only right if community power is indeed a cheaper way to go green.

This initiative is about going green, PG&E freaking out about it while spending hundreds of millions investing in new fossil fuel production does seem to belie their position of ripping off people as much as possible via carbon-based energy to maximize corporate profits at the expense of the environment and rate-payers. In that quest, they have a useful tool for their profits in Gavin Newsom, who is siding with the polluters against the Sierra Club on whether we should listen to Al Gore and make the switch to clean energy. Which is both sad and bad politics.

and now the lie is revealed (0.00 / 0)
or at least "assumptions."

a front loaded intiative to tell people one thing and do another is just typical of city politics. Those proposed City funded power plants are powered by dead dinosaurs - to suggest otherwise is a fallacy.

It's like when we voted to "save" the cable cars - and when we did we actually voted to kill off the most of the system, including the money making Washington Jackson line.

Once again deceptive politics takes the place of good policy making. And the assumptions about PG and E, who may or may not be on the Board of Supervisors and more are all fallacies. You'll excuse me if I don't buy Yet Another Line of Bull from City politicians about what's best for me.

what are you talking about? (0.00 / 0)
First, read the damn thing before you embarrass yourself by talking out your ass. This initiative is simple, it decides we want to make the switch to clean electricity and figures out the cheapest way to do it. The only deception has been by you, repeatedly, because like the mayor you either have no clue what you're talking about or have decided regurgitating right wing talking points is better than joining the reality based community.

PG&E flooding mailboxes with lies appears to be working with low information voters...

So now you insult me, as you did during Leno's campaign (0.00 / 0)
Ok Bob, I see a pattern. You insult me instead of informing me, and you use the same bully tactics you used during Leno's campaign, right out of the Chris Daly playbook. Are you going to accuse me of violating Net Neutrality the way you did with David Chiu? Wow. You really are on fire.

I do appreciate you hating me though, and I do appreciate you hating on the Mayor. That's because you again, refuse to talk about the realities of this nonsense that's wrapped in a goody goody wrapper, but is concealing a world-class tax and spend turd.

Keep calling ME names, Bob. I appreciate it. It just again makes me realize that you won't answer the questions, you won't say what it's all about, and won't have an honest debate without resorting to name calling and threats.

You did this in the Leno campaign, and now you're doing it here. Fine. Just so we're clear, I'd be happy to talk about this, but you're more happy making personal insults and drunk dials. Sorry, not a way to convince me you're the one with the moral high ground.
