CA-Gov 2010: Let Newsom be Newsom

by: Bob Brigham

Sun Jul 20, 2008 at 12:36:32 PM PDT

The first campaign I worked for San Francisco Mayor Gavin Newsom was waaaaay back in 2000. And if you ask me, a good deal of his perception problems are that he is over scripted, over protected, over done. I think the most likely way for Mayor Newsom to win the 2010 Gubernatorial campaign is if they let Newsom be Newsom. His handlers don't have to be defensive, but when they are it shows. Like this:

I just asked Newsom if he would support the Clean Energy Act.  At first, he said yes -- absolutely.  Then he said, "oh are you talking about the one about PG&E?"  I said yes.  He said, "oh no it's horrible."  I asked him to elaborate, but he would not.  I then asked, "is that because your consultant [Eric Jaye] is working for PG&E?"  Newsom denied it, but really.  It was kinda pathetic.

Ouch. Paul Hogarth has more at Beyond Chron. Why can't he just stop trying to calculate by what he's told and follow his gut? It worked for Marriage Equality.

Al Gore believes we can have the entire country go with clean electrical energy in a decade and Newsom is going to oppose the "can do City" doing the same by 2040? Ouch.

This is beyong stupid.... (0.00 / 0)

....I was kinda thinking that maybe Newsome had a future as a progressive Dem.

Of course, this could be just him being confused or misunderstanding the question.

Sure hope so; otherwise he can kiss my vote...

Goodbye.

I like Jerry at Governor he was great first time around and it would help run for Pres in 2016.

Has been going all ToughOnCrimeTM and many of the same complaints that are made about Newsom are made about Brown's tenure in Oakland. He was also (more than) a bit overexuberant about gentrification.

And it would be doubtful that Brown would run for president as he would be quite old for a run for the president. (He's 70 now) While he was the progressive when he ran for president in 1992, I'm not sure that's how he would run next time.

I think?

It's not about Progressive vs Moderate (0.00 / 0)
The problem with Gavin Newsom is not his rhetoric or style, but his record. While he scored a tremendous victory for marriage equity and has been a leader for alternative energy, he seemed to forget the basic issues facing the city: Clean streets and sidewalks, panhandling (and I would argue many are NOT homeless), crime, graffiti, improving parks and many others. While it's not right to rest a 100% of the blame on his feet, his action, or lack thereof, has been miserable.

There's no doubt the equity issue will push him to the forefront of the race, but when his record on other matters is scrutinized, many will find it lacking.

Has always focused on these day-to-day issues.  And he seems quite keen on a run for mayor.

newsom's entire schtick has been based on facades with little to back them up.

what really makes the guy a disappointment is that he talks a really good game.  he's got a real command of the stage when he's speechifying and he really does exude the appearance of compassion and competence (i.e. taking local 2's side early on, supporting marriage equality and leaving dennis herrera to actually make it happen, and having some reasonable success with his care not cash policy).  the problem has always in the implementation and follow through (hope SF, affordable housing, planning & police reform, comprehensive environmental policy).  what's worse is that he seems thoroughly unable to take constructive criticism or negotiate in good faith with political adversaries.

while it would be great to get newsom out of san francisco give me a real progressive who can take a stand on an issue that is at odds with the corporate crowd.
