CA-Gov: When will we have the results?

by: Brian Leubitz

Mon Jun 05, 2006 at 18:21:10 PM PDT

With an extremely close election predicted, it's worth considering when we will get the results.

Alameda County's return to low-tech voting Tuesday could make for a long evening for poll workers and leave the state's neck-and-neck Democratic gubernatorial primary undecided overnight.

The county's inability to quickly process paper ballots after shelving its electronic voting machines may make Alameda the determining factor because 5.7 percent of the state's registered Democrats live there.(AP (SJ M-N) 6/3/06)

Alameda County will likely break towards Angelides.  It will be interesting to see if the early vote favors Westly and if it shifts later towards Angelides.

Of course, a disastrous result, as Dan Weitraub pointed out,  a protracted ballot counting process combined with any legal fights afterward would dig the ultimate Dem nominee a hole that may be too deep to dig out of.  The nasty primary battle will already give us a weakened candidate.  We certainly don't need any more complications.

I don't think the speed of the vote count or any challenges will matter in the long run (0.00 / 0)
I'm sorry, I think the idea that if we don't know immediately who the nominee is will somehow damage the winner in the November election, 5 months off is farfetched.  Like most political junkies, I want my fix tomorrow night or on Wednesday at the latest, but this ins't fast food and the republic is not going to be threatened if it takes longer to figure out who the winner is.

It is more important that the votes be counted accurately and that each and every vote is recorded.  If Arnold is going out on a road trip the day after the election, he and his attack dogs won't know who to attack.  That wouldn't be bad.

I'll admit there is some chance that a very long fight--with the candidates and/or their surrogates mouthing off could be damaging, but I doubt that will occur.  Hope I'm right.

A day isn't a problem (0.00 / 0)
WIth that I agree.  What I do think could be a problem is anyting that makes us look like we don't have our shit together.

I think?

Sounds Familiar (0.00 / 0)
Alameda County sounds like the City of Detroit when it comes to vote counting. Very old people handling handling the absentee ballots and screwing up the results.
