Election Roundup 5/7/08

by: David Dayen

Wed May 07, 2008 at 11:05:59 AM PDT

• CA-03: Bill Durston may be unopposed in the June 3 primary, but he's running very hard and trying to pick up as many decline-to-state voters as possible.  He's actually running a GOTV operation.  The gambit here is to prove to donors and the political establishment that CA-03 is competitive.  I also think it makes sense just as practice for the general and for name recognition.

• CA-04: The Club for Growth, whose record this year in primaries is actually a little mixed, has released an ad attacking Doug Ose in his race against Tom McClintock.  There's plenty of outside money on both sides in this one.

• CA-42: Communications Workers of America, Southern California Council has endorsed Ron Shepston.  It's somewhat notable considering that Ed Chau got the Cal Labor Fed endorsement.

Anything else you're hearing, please put it in the comments.  This is an open-source elections thread.

CA-03 may indeed be competitive (5.00 / 1)
The registration numbers are pretty good.

Democratic: 140,298 (37.02%)
Republican: 156,430 (41.27%)
DTS: 66,221 (17.47%)

This is the closest district in registration held by a Republican.

If we look at at a bellweather race like Boxer/Jones '04

Boxer: 45.7%
Jones: 51.1%

And this is a much better year for Democrats than 2004.

CA 04 Max Cleland + Charlie Brown in Sac last week on Vet's issues (8.00 / 1)
.... were talking about the problems with getting the Veteran's administration to acknowlege how many Veterans from the current mid East wars were needing better screening and care from the VA and were having trouble getting it.

There has been an ongoing story in the news over the past 3 weeks sort of flying under the main stream radar about the scandal at the Veteran's Admin., which has known that a third of a million veterans (!) have suffered traumatic brain injury, roughly another third of a million may be at risk for PTSD, they are having OUTRAGEOUS numbers of vets (current and past wars) and current military trying to, and succeeding at, committing suicide, (thousands per year) and worst of all, the head of the VA's mental health div.  has been trying to cover it up.

I did a long article summarizing all this, it's posted at daily kos right now, and rapidly falling off the front page because it does not have the words "white", "Hillary" or "Obama" in the title.

Meanwhile, the Repub from SoCal in the primary who's come 400 miles up here is running around with goonies from the Minuteman thumping his chest on this "secure our borders" bullshit.  The other equally useless but richer one has mastered the art of the useless sound bite.

I would apreciate anyone reading this diary:

crossposting it here (0.00 / 0)
could give it a bit more longevity. once you've coded the HTML once, all you gotta do is cut and paste.
