Cathedral City Medical Marijuana Clinic: 3 Republicans Vote to Close, 2 Democrats Vote to Keep Open

Overheard Saturday night at the Democrats of the Desert Awards Banquet at the Las Rancho Palmas Resort, the decision to seek to close the Cathedral City medical marijuana clinic was made by Mayor Kathy DeRosa (R), Mayor Pro Tem Charles England (R), and Councilmember Chuck Vasquez (R-Closet Case) who voted to close the clinic.

Councilmember Greg Pettis (D), Candidate for the CA 80th Assembly District, and Councilmember Paul Marchand (D), Candidate for Mayor of Cathedral City, voted to support the clinic but were overruled by the Republican majority on council.  In fact, Pettis was slated to appear at an event to support medical marijuana patients at Copy Kats last night, but the event was postponed.

More below the flip...

BlueBeaumontBoyz :: Cathedral City Medical Marijuana Clinic: 3 Republicans Vote to Close, 2 Democrats Vote to Keep Open
According to a Cathedral City source for background, Cathedral City council, under the auspices of DeRosa, has a policy to apparently vote on issues in private and to not announce the individual votes of the councilmembers.  This is really "Small Town in Mass Society" (Vidich) mentality.  Anyway, the Desert Sun never printed who voted what way as the specific vote was never announced as per usual.

Seems that DeRosa, England, and Vasquez are out of step with Californians overall and Cathedral City residents who favor keeping the clinic open to service patients diagnosed with cancer, chronic pain, glaucoma, HIV/AIDS, etc.  Isn't this the same party that opposes stem cell research?  What kind of family values does the Republican party really have?

This is why we're turning red California blue. They just doen't get it. It was a pleasure to meet the 80th AD folks in San Jose.

Turning Riverside and the Coachella Valley Blue (8.00 / 1)
We now have at least seven Democratic cities including Riverside, Moreno Valley, Perris, Blythe, Palm Springs, Coachella, and Indio, in Riverside County.  In 2004, in the Coachella Valley, Palm Springs, Desert Hot Springs, Cathedral City, Indio, and Coachella all voted for Kerry/Edwards over Bush/Cheney.

By most accounts, Beaumont and Banning should also be Democratic with the large numbers of unregistered Latinos and unregistered voters moving in from Los Angeles and Orange Counties.  This should happen by the turn of the decade as Beaumont's population is slated to swell from the current 30,000 or so to build out at 90,000 - 120,000 residents.

In 2000, the Republicans dominated the 80th Assembly District with the redistricting.  Now, however, Democrats outnumber Republicans by over 15,000, and this does not include Declines to State who are now regularly voting Democratic.

Turing the Coachella Valley blue is in process.  If we take Riverside County, then the Republicans lose another county, one of the most populous inland counties.  Then, California becomes solidly blue for the foreseeable future.

Kudos to Greg and Paul (0.00 / 0)
Someday soon that ratio will flip in CC.  Opposing the easing of patients' suffering is completely irrational.

Flipping Cathedral City: Democratic City Council Candidates Wanted (0.00 / 0)
Soyinkafan, yes, we used to have three seats Democratic on council some time ago.  Actually, wasn't Chuck Vasquez (closet case) a Democrat until after he won election?

We will do it again.  With Paul Marchand running for Mayor to replace the horrific Kathy DeRosa (sells self as Latina, really Italian) and Greg Pettis winning the Democratic nomination for the CA 80th Assembly District (tehe), we will need two or three more good Democratic candidates for Cathedral City City Council.
