Republicans Convex on Foster Care

by: Brian Leubitz

Fri Jun 29, 2007 at 10:48:52 AM PDT

Of the things you fight, you'd assume that money for children in foster care would be pretty low on your battle list.  But, the Assembly Senate Republicans fight to make sure not one more dime goes to those damn kids. I mean, they've got enough already, those dern foster care rich kids

Their uneasy coexistence with Gov. Arnold Schwarzenegger now at the lowest point in his tenure, Republican state lawmakers are rebelling in increasingly public ways over administration efforts both big and small.

GOP state senators refused Thursday to sign off on the administration's request to pay for cost overruns in the state's foster care system. Republican objections to Schwarzenegger's proposed budget for the coming fiscal year all but guarantee that the state will miss its Saturday deadline for putting a new spending plan in place.[(LA Times 6/29/07) ]

Oh, you mean foster kids aren't rich? Oh...right.  So, the GOP finally realizes that  Arnold has sold them out, or well, at least he wasn't who they expected him to be.  Welcome to the club Mr. Villines Ackerman, I think Bill Lockyer is waiting for you at Table 2.

Here (0.00 / 0)
is my offering on the subject.  It is completely unsurprising that the Republicans are pitching a fit.  The purposely picked leaders that would be more confrontational with Arnold than the previous ones.  It just so happens that foster kids get to be their big target.  We are talking about a pretty small amount here $10.5 million that they are balking on.

Seems like the budget its going to be late and if they keep this up it might be a while until we get it passed.

The concern I have (0.00 / 0)
Is that the Dems aren't done caving - that with the GOP suggesting they won't compromise at all, the Dem leadership will just cut a quick and ugly deal with Arnold and the GOP leaders to get a budget done quickly so as to not piss off voters ahead of the February term limits vote.

Which is a vote they're going to lose anyway - the conservatives don't want it, and this caving will alienate the Democratic base.

Someone needs some Dale Carnegie Negotiation training (8.00 / 1)
Or does he do public speaking. Whatever. Either way, we have been getting beat over and over again. Seriously, when are we going to put the 2/3 rule back on the ballot.  It has to go.

I think?

At some point (8.00 / 1)
You've gotta take a stand on this sort of stuff even if 2/3 is in the way. Let em defend their vote next time out. I'd love to have that debate.

At the risk of being that bad Capitol reality check guy (8.00 / 2)
This was done by the SENATE Republicans, not the ASSEMBLY Republicans. In fact, ASSEMBLY Republicans unanimously supported the bill before it was derailed by the extremists in the Senate.
