You can the conservative out of the Republican Party but...:

FBI agents carrying out a criminal investigation searched the City Hall office of San Francisco Supervisor Ed Jew on Friday and several other properties tied to the rookie lawmaker.

Federal authorities familiar with the probe refused to discuss what the FBI was looking for, but Jew told The Chronicle that agents questioned him about $40,000 in cash he had accepted from a group of businessmen who had sought his help with city permit problems.

With the FBI apparently having multiple pages listing the serial numbers of specific $100 bills, Jew replied something about, "an unorthodox way of paying."

[Jew] is a former local Republican Party vice chairman but changed his party affiliation to Democrat before running for office in 2006.

I point the reader to his quote (0.00 / 0)
a few months back.  http://www.calitics....

After only two months in office, I am already tiring of hearing ideas that require a blank check from taxpayers. This Board of Supervisors needs to stop spending money with the irresponsible abandon of children at a shopping mall, confident that Mommy and Daddy will pay the bill no matter how much it is. (SF Examiner 3/1/07)

The man is a Republican. Unfortunately, he tricked enough people and ran in a four way race that got him the victory.  If he lasts long enough to get to the next election, a better coordinated challenger to the left, even in this district, will easily take him out.

I think?

Well (0.00 / 0)
Chan and Mak took each other apart, and with SF's ranked-choice system, it helps someone who stays out of the fight. I wonder who will take Jew's place if he steps down.

"Questions mount" (0.00 / 0)
Or so says the Chron in a new article, emphasizing the likelihood that Ed Jew doesn't live in his listed D4 home, but instead down in Burlingame.

One of my favorite parts is this quote from one of 'Jew's backers who isn't wavering in their support':

Mike DeNunzio, chairman of the California Republican Assembly for San Francisco, said Jew has been a breath of fresh air on a Board of Supervisors that has been too quick to pass new regulations and taxes.

As far as I can tell the only question now is who will resign first - Abu Gonzales or Ed Jew?

You can check out any time you like but you can never leave

Ed Jew probably deserves jail time (0.00 / 0)
I know it isn't really relevant to the conversation (just the defense) but I have a soft spot in my heart for DeNunzio. Because if I'm going to debate a Republican, I would always appreciate somebody who believes in a an honest and open debate with the expectation that it be great. I really enjoy disagreeing with DeNunzio and I've been proud to work with him on some crucial initiatives. The dude's politics are awful, but he'd challenge me to use better language to rip on him and that is righteous.

I disagree with DeNunzio on most things, but I respect him. Some people you vote against because of hate, some because you have respect and know your side can do better.
