Obama Has Their Heart, Hillary Has Their Head

by: Todd Beeton

Sat Apr 28, 2007 at 13:37:28 PM PDT

At the press conference I posted about over at ATM Watch, a journalist told Hillary the following regarding the delegates on the floor:

"Obama has their heart, you have their head."

Now, Obama hasn't spoken yet (he's on at 2pm) but his campaign is certainly the most visible here at the convention and you get the sense that his supporters are the most passionate. And while there was some excitement on the floor in anticipation of Hillary's speech, mostly among young women, there was very little as she was actually speaking. And her speech reflected why.  She committed the cardinal Democratic sin: making a laundry list of what she will do as president.

Todd Beeton :: Obama Has Their Heart, Hillary Has Their Head
As a wise woman leaned over and whispered to me, "she has no thesis." This is in stark contrast to Obama whose entire campaign is about the overarching theme of a new kind of politics. What does Hillary offer other than experience and a husband whom we all would on some level love to see back in the White House? Whatever it is, she didn't make the case on the floor today. You sort of get the sense that she's written off a certain segment of the Democratic primary electorate and she made no effort to win them over today.

There was no "there" there (0.00 / 0)
the theme in the caucuses yesterday was how Hillary was Presidential, and she bent over backwards today to remain "inevitable" and seemed like she was trying too hard.  She had several chances to talk about California issues and just kept saying "California's great." That's all well and good, but not much help.

If Hillary's problem is she has no thesis, Obama's currently is he's got a great intro and conclusion but no actual details in the body paragraphs.

(sorry, stuck here in Seattle grading papers while you all are having fun in SD)

Why such hate?  She is really the best candidate...The problem is there are too many ideological puritans who would rather lose than see a dem of less than lib credentials win...sick...

Dear modem (8.00 / 1)
    You state: "Why such hate?"

Give example please.

You state: "She is really the best candidate"

Give examples

You state: "The problem is there are too many ideological puritans who would rather lose than see a dem of less than lib credentials win"

Are you psychic? How can you presume to know I'm thinking?

Riddle me this, modem: Average People in the Democratic Party have voted with concurrence and acquiescence to the so-called "consultants" discernment for decades and where has that gotten us?

I'll tell you: precisely 4 (four) Democratic Governors in California in the last 100 years, and precisely 2 (two) Democratic Presidents in approximately the last 40 years.

I'd rather be an idealogical puritan, than a conciliatory milquetoast who votes us into a mid-eastern quagmire from which there's no escape - a gordian knot with no solution; or votes for a bankruptcy bill which punishes those who go into debt because of illness; or a school funding bill which punishes those who need the most help; shall I go on?

I'll make up my own mind thank you very much

Oh, and btw, modem, just so you know, the very first president for whom I ever voted was, one, Ronald Wilson Reagan, and the second for whom I voted was George Herbert Walker Bush.

"Ideological Puritan"??? {{{rolls eyes}}}

Who was the last Democrat to win the prsidency? (0.00 / 0)
Bill Clinton.

The same Bill Clinton from the DLC that the partisans love to hate.  In the face of DTS (centrists, or moderates, or whatever you care to call them) being the biggest growing political party in California, it would serve all Democrats well to remind themselves who the Winners are.  Rahm Emmanuel (DLC) delivered Congress to the Dems, whether you like it or not.  Bill Clinton (DLC) delivered the presidency to the Dems, whether you like it or not.  Hillary Clinton will deliver the presidency the Dems, whether you like or not.

I mean, I get it...It's good to be progressive...But you know what?  It's beter to be pragmatic.  Especially if you win.
