Isolated from the Movement? Speaker Nunez takes the Easy Way Out, endorses HRC

by: Brian Leubitz

Wed Apr 25, 2007 at 12:12:50 PM PDT

Well, straight from the horses' mouth you can get the Speaker's endorsement of Sen. Clinton for President.  Personally, I think the Speaker is making a mistake in two ways here. One, it's early, sure HRC is leading now, but her lead is strongest amongst low-information voters.  As people discover that they have some good choices, they will move away from her.

Two, HRC is lacking in support from the grassroots.  This endorsement won't help that. Obama got 10,000 to pack into Frank Ogawa plaza, and Edwards has connected recently with the grassroots.  And Bill Richardson, the resume candidate, is still out there, waiting for somebody to falter. HRC refuses to admit that she was wrong to vote Yes for Iraq, and that will be her albatross as the war gets even worse.

To me, this endorsement gives a big middle finger to the grassroots and especially the netroots.  So, will it work? Ultimately, I doubt quite seriously that this changes more than a handful of votes. Frankly, is the Nunez base really going to drift to HRC because he says she is qualified? I'm of the opinion that these endorsements are more inside baseball than anything else.  If she wins, maybe such an early endorsement from Nunez gets him a swank job if the term limits deal goes down.

Finally, the Speaker talks about the chance to make history, and I don't deny that. But, you know what, we have a lot of ways to make history. We can make history by identity politics, and HRC isn't the only one who can play that game.  But we can also make history by winning with real ideas, real leadership, and I'm just not convinced that HRC is the right choice there.

Nunez Endorses Joementum (0.00 / 0)
This is the equivalent of endorsing Joe Lieberman four years ago. It is beyond me why he would support a top-down, poll following, DLC motortiling or the grassroots approach instead of the opposite strategy that won the last election for Democrats. Does he not want Pelosi to be Speaker any longer?

You're right, this is a giant middle finger to the base.

well you can't be surprised (8.00 / 1)
Nunez is an ambitious cat, and Hillary's team is of course leaning on a lot of these state leaders for endorsements.

I'll take John Burton's endorsement any day.

Also, does this mean AT&T endorses Clinton by proxy?

term limits? (0.00 / 0)
Is somebody trying out for Secretary of the Establishment?

Doesn't this suggest (8.00 / 1)
That he IS a low-information voter? I think maybe that's the option I'd prefer given the other possibilities.

And here I thought you had rules for respect ... (4.00 / 3)
Steve Maviglio from the Speaker's office.

The Speaker endorsed Senator Clinton for one reason: she's the best candidate for the job. The most experience. Progressive. Smart.

We have an embarassment of riches this year in the Democratic field. And last time I checked, no one owns the "netroots." And "lacking in support from the grassroots?" You also might want to double-check the number of small contributors to Sen. Clinton and the great turnout she's getting on the road. It's not as large as one other candidate, but it is impressive.

It's really a shame that the posters above have to resort to cheap potshots about ambition and fundraising. This site deserves better than that.

gotta call BS (8.00 / 1)
The best candidate for the job has failed to learn the lessons of her Iraq disaster and will keeps us there forever? Is this a joke?

No one owns the netroots but Anyone But Clinton has the momentum Dean had four years ago (since she is running on the Lieberman platform).

There is nothing impressive about Clinton's campaign and to suggest show shows the huge disconnect within the Democratic Party. Clinton is running a higher efficiency 20th century campaign (like Angelides) and every candidate in the country would be wise to cross the bridge into the 21st century and use modern campaign strategy and tactics.

Nunez deserves better than that. And pushing this online is like raising his middle finger higher in the air.

This shows a huge disconnect.

Is there something wrong with ambition (0.00 / 0)
All of a sudden?  That was more a comment on Hillary's overt, demonstrated attempt to lock up endorsements and claiming to "cut off" those who disobey.  It's been in every paper.  As for the shame, I'd say it's a shame that 4 million dollars in a campaign slush fund didn't go to a phone bank, or a canvassing operation, or direct mail, or a couple extra radio spots, or maybe another van to get people without transportation to the polls.  That's a crying shame.

Incidentally, I'd work very hard for a Clinton ticket if she's nominated.  And I was pleasantly surprised by her appearance at Firedoglake to chat yesterday.  I don't support her in the primary; I don't support anyone right now.

I also hope that when you write about the '08 race in the future for CMR, you will disclose up front that you're a full-on Hillary supporter.  Because otherwise, people reading you say that Hillary has nothing to lose at this weekend's convention won't know it's coming from a hard-core partisan.

Clinton's a good Democrat... (0.00 / 0)
And you're totally right, Mr. Maviglio, that we have such an embarrassment of riches on our side. We have many great Democrats to choose from, and it says something about our party. However, many of us just don't think that Hillary Clinton is the BEST candidate. Personally, I LOVE HILLARY, and I'd be more than happy to see her as our 44th President. However, I also have issues with her wavering on getting out of Iraq. And I have other issues regarding her stances on some other issues. And I know that many of us just don't know if she's the best standard-bearer for our party. That's why many of us are supporting other candidates.

Now personally, I don't care who Speaker Nunez endorses. So he likes Hillary? Good for him. I'll support Hillary, too, if she's our nominee. I guess some here are just concerned that he's jumping onto her bandwagon too quickly.

But whatever. I like Hillary, and I think she'd make a great President. However I also like Obama, and I just think he'd make a better President. That's all. : )

Hillary would make a great president like Gray Davis made a great governor -- for the exact same reasons.

Indeed, nobody owns the netroots (0.00 / 0)
But it doesn't take very long to discover that, in fact, HRC just isn't that popular in the netroots. She finished two points behind "Other" in the dKos straw poll; she fared similarly in the MyDD poll.  I think it can be gleaned by consistent straw polls in the progressive blogosphere, that she just isn't that popular. Nobody owns the blogosphere, but the facts are the facts.

I don't think that she would be a bad president.  Heck, next to the current president, she'd be frickin' Linclon or FDR or something. But, when you are given the choice, why should we choose DLC? We are progressives after all. So why would we support a woman that has made triangulation her forte.

And on the lacking support from the grassroots, well, when you attempt to make yourself the establishment candidate as Sen. Clinton has done, I think a wariness on behalf of the grassroots is likely.  Plus the whole DLC thing doesn't help.  Sen. Clinton's support is primarily low-information voters at this point, so, tell me why I should think that she has grassroots support outside of her base?  And I'm betting that there will be few of those LIV left as we head towards the primary.

And on standards, I'm not accusing the Speaker of doing anything wrong, I'm just talking about the politics here. Let's face it, the reason many politicians endorse candidates in the primary is for reasons of ambition. I don't really have any problem with that. In fact, I think the Speaker would be an excellent Secretary of Labor, or of the Interior, or whatever. But that being said, why is it out of bounds to mention that?  After all, we are talking about politicians, does anybody really believe ambition isn't a factor?

I think?

Speaker Núñez can endorse anyone he wants (0.00 / 0)
I know HRC is very politically astute, and capable, and has all the right people working for her, and she will do extremely well ...

But don't patronize us/me (netroots) with statements like

The Speaker endorsed Senator Clinton for one reason: she's the best candidate for the job. The most experience. Progressive. Smart.

Which is purely subjective, and as you are aware, conventional "netiquette" says you should give specific examples with hyperlinks to bolster your points

  • How is she the best candidate?

  • How does she have the most experience?

  • The most progressive?

  • Smart?

which would only help with your case. Also you/The Speaker are welcome to your opinion but I don't share it. I won't go into detail for two reasons: 1) I don't have time and 2) I'm not in a mood to air dirty laundry (figure of speech)

Have fantastic evening!

Just to clear up what (0.00 / 0)
might be some confusion - my reply was to sacguy

the most experience? (8.00 / 1)
no, that would be richardson.

progressive? sorry, but the vote for the bankruptcy bill in 2001, the iraq war, and BS about video games when the very republic is in the process of being undermined is pretty weak tea.

clinton is neither inspiring nor the best that the democratic party can do. and the blood of hundreds of thousands of iraqis and thousands of americans are on her hands, and will not wash off so easily.

Like I said ... (8.00 / 1)
Tearing other Democrats down is no way to push other candidates up.

Sen. Clinton doesn't want to keep us in Iraq forever. And her voting record is nothing like Joe Lieberman's.

And BTW, her campaign is nothing like Angelides. It's being run by many of the same people that elected the last Democratic President, not those who have fallen by the wayside in Democratic primaries.

Keep your eyes on the prize, and enough with the cheapshots.

I don't have a candidate other than not DLC (0.00 / 0)
Clinton has said we won't leave Iraq during her presidency. She is the Joe Lieberman of 2008 and her Joementum is the reason she is falling in the polls. And how is Nunez going to look if she is boo'd this weekend for failing to realize that Iraq was a mistake on her part?

Her campaign is Angelides nationwide, it is really that bad. It is run by the same people who couldn't get 50% for the Big Dog.

My eye is on the prize, that is why I'm wondering why Nunez would make an ass of himself amongst the CA activists by trying to kiss up to an establishment candidate. Nunez could do so much in California and pissing on the grassroots isn't the way to do it. This was a really bad move, and just like Clinton should acknowledge Iraq was a mistake, Nunez should acknowledge this was a mistake.

Some of us crossed the bridge to the 21st century, please join us.

eh! (8.00 / 1)
whatever...
other then institutional support and perhaps a little bit of head turning from low info voters, this isn't super surprising to me.
Nunez is totally establishment and ambitious as all get out.

He's taking what he sees as the safe bet.

Of course we know that Clinton will NOT be the nominee.

but hey, there ya go.

I live in Oakland and I like talking about politics. Who'd have thunk I'd be writing here?!

Nunez Backed Howard Dean last time (0.00 / 0)
So enough with the Lieberman smears.

what changed (0.00 / 0)
Why did he not go with the DLC when it was in vogue but is going with it now that it has been discredited?
