Janice Hahn: Extreme Makeover Edition

by: Marta Evry

Wed Jun 29, 2011 at 16:22:27 PM PDT

How about that CA-36 election?

Racist videos, demands, counter demands, FEC complaintsmassive fundraising off of said video, a weird "sexting" scandal involving Hahn's former chief of staff, more negative mailers than I can shake a stick at, and now this:

Janice Hahn is apparently no longer a Democrat.

According to the ad above, Janice Hahn is "a local City Council Woman who has never held partisan office."

Let's review for a second, shall we? Just two months ago, when Hahn was competing for the official CA Dem Party endorsement, her campaign caused quite a stir when it called into question a competing candidate's party loyalty, saying,

I was born a Democrat, I was raised a Democrat, and when I am elected to Congress, I will never forget that I'm a Democrat," said Councilwoman Janice Hahn. "I grew up learning early on about Democratic values-my dad, former Los Angeles County Supervisor Kenny Hahn taught me about civil rights, equality, and the importance of the middle class. When I go to Congress I pledge to stand up for these Democratic values and be a fighter for the people of the 36th Congressional District."

Hahn's new persona isn't just limited to TV advertising either. More over the flip.

Marta Evry :: Janice Hahn: Extreme Makeover Edition
One of the first things her campaign did was change her ballot description from "LA City Councilwoman" to "Local City Councilwoman", hoping to erase any negative associations and connections with the City of Los Angeles.

And in mailers sent out from the LA County Federation of Labor this week, there's this:

So this is clearly a strategy on Hahn's part to pivot away from her partisan image and depict the candidate in such a way that she'll appeal to independent and swing voters.

Now this might be a good strategy in a general election where you're dealing with less informed voters and have time to rebrand yourself, but that's not the election we're in now.

This election is a low turnout down and dirty sprint to the finish, where both candidates have to fire up a committed base of informed, partisan voters and drag them to the polls.  The last thing you want to do is run away from the partisan voters who brung you to the dance in the first place.

Craig Huey certainly isn't running away from his base. They're fired up and ready to go, recruiting Tea Party volunteers from as far away as San Diego to come canvass for the candidate.

And Huey isn't at all shy about using Hahn's numerous (and valid IMHO) attacks against him to both fire up his own voters and depress Hahn's potential Democratic base. This week an IE from the "Friends of Huey For Congress" sent out a flyer calling into question Hahn's honesty by dredging up the attacks her campaign made against Debra Bowen in the final days of the primary, even going as far as quoting Bowen's campaign manager, as well as I post I put up on Daily Kos during the primary.

Now anyone reading my blog or the posts about the CA-36 race I've written here knows I'm not the biggest fan of Janice Hahn, but I also don't want my district handed over to a Tea-bagger. I hope somebody, anybody from Hahn's campaign will read this and come to their senses.

In an election where turnout could go as low as 10-15%, where the electorate is suffering from some serious voter fatigue, and many others have no idea there even is an election, firing up the base is everything.

In Hahn's case, the base are committed Democrats who want a committed Democrat to fight for them in congress. By now presenting herself to voters as a "local City Council Woman who has never held partisan office", she's basically signaling to the base she's yet another wishy-washy DINO Congress-critter who may or may not uphold the values they hold dear. Better than a Teabagger, sure, but not by much.

And that, dear friends, can be a recipe for disaster. I guess we'll know for sure in two weeks.

I hope that she wins, but (4.67 / 3)
if she loses it will be because she ran away from being a Democrat.  Maybe that will be a wake-up call.

And thanks, LA County Federation of Labor!  Let's see how this would work coming from a Democrat about labor issues:

"I don't care about unions.  But I do want to vote for the best candidate for Democrats."

Yeah, that sounds really helpful, doesn't it?  Solidarity forever!

Polling data? (0.00 / 0)
Are you aware of any recent polling for CA-36?  My assumption was that Hahn was a lock, but I certainly see a lot of Huey signs (in MB), a guy came to my door with a DVD, so I'm starting to get a little concerned.

Well... (0.00 / 0)
Politico said a couple weeks ago that an "internal Democratic" polling had Huey down by only 5, which was within the margin of error.

We should all be concerned...And we should help Hahn (4.50 / 2)
We can debate and comment on campaign messaging all we want. But what we should be doing is calling and walking for Janice Hahn.

Not only is it imperative that she win, but that she win by a wide margin.

Republicans pushed these jungle primaries because they reached a ceiling in getting their people elected, so they wanted to jigger the rules.

Let's not let that jiggering upset our apple cart and give them a seat in the South Bay.

I'll be walking for Janice this weekend through election day.

I urge commentators to apply their acumen in persuading voters to vote Hahn.  Using that time and energy to discuss the fine points amongst the faithful isn't very productive.

We need results, Janice Hahn in Congress.

One point (4.00 / 2)
The jungle primary didn't really affect the outcome in this race.  Under the old special election rules, voters would have been able to vote for any candidate, and the top vote-getter in each party would advance to the general.

The only real losers under the Top-2 system are the minor parties who got totally ditched in the process.

I think?

I'm happy to help Hahn! (5.00 / 2)
I'll start by not trying to terrify Jewish voters about the positions on Israel held by Democratic constitutional officeholders so as to push them to take positions that bring in another candidate to split the progressive vote.  That should preserve party unity and activist enthusiasm in the runoff.

By the way, can we have the name of the brilliant Democratic consultant who devised the "use Marcy to beat Bowen" strategy so that we can send him or her flowers if Huey wins?

The Bowen Myth. (0.00 / 0)
A myth that continues to troll around online is that Bowen's decision to take the Israel pledge infuriated Marcy Winograd so much that it prompted her to enter the race.

It's a false premise with no basis in fact except from Bowen supporters seeking a reason why the SOS didn't make the runoff.

Marcy Winograd has been running for congress since 2006. That's 5 years. She wanted very much to go to congress.

She skipped a second shot at Jane Harman in 2008 at her own peril and decided again to run in 2010 with no traditional party support.

Her support was strictly grass roots peace activists, liberals and other progressives who saw her as a reliable and steady voice for their issues which was green jobs, healthcare and the termination of the conflicts in Iraq & Afghanistan.

The fact is Marcy Winograd was seriously considering supporting the Bowen candidacy.

The Bowen camp never reached out to her in a serious way unlike Janice Hahn who had sought Marcy's support almost immediately.

It became apparent Bowen was going to run with or without Marcy and thus Marcy jumped in as well on the notion the race was wide open given the new primary process.

Keep in mind one fact here, Winograd was the last major Democrat to enter the race and that would have happened regardless of the pledge which has become overblown as to it's impact on the results.

For Marcy, fundraising was difficult but she stayed true to her message and did the right thing endorsing Hahn.

In fact Marcy's campaign given the limited resources had a huge following of volunteers and did extremely well in garnering over 6,000 votes and beating Hahn in several areas of the district north of LAX.

Marcy shined in most of the debates while being drowned out by Hahn & Bowen's money advantage in the mail.

Had Bowen seriously attempted to negotiate with Winograd knowing what we know now, the SOS could have made the runoff.

Why Bowen never took Winograd seriously was a strategic error.

To this day I never understood why Bowen didn't tout her long resume of winning tough races. That she was the Democrat that never lost. It was her best card in her hand and it was never used.

I've discussed this with Marcy online (2.00 / 1)
The pledge was a huge factor and a big surprise.

I don't have any basis to analyze your contentions about Bowen not having taken Marcy seriously -- that seems doubtful -- and not reaching out to her.  Perhaps she didn't want to bargain away her future positions out of, what is it that some people call it, prin... um, principle?

Hey, what do you think Janice would have done had it become known that Bowen had negotiated with Marcy for her to stay out of the race?  What ads would we have seen then?  We'd probably have had an even more divisive first round.

Seriously, though, good luck to Janice.  She may need it.

Bowen ran a poor campaign. (0.00 / 0)
When all is said and done, Debra Bowen ran a terrible campaign.

The decision not to court Winograd was a huge blunder and results clearly point to that fact.

What principle would have Bowen negoiated away?

She ran a vanilla campaign that said nothing while she toted around that Profiles in Courage award as if it were the Stanley Cup!

That's the point.

What was Bowen's position on the war or the economy?

Had Winograd endorsed her it would have been a shot in the arm to a campaign that was just message less and rudderless for weeks.

What could have Hahn done? Run an ad about two candidates finding common ground?

When all is said and done, Bowen lost this race more than Hahn won it...
