Woolsey to Make Announcement Next Week

by: Brian Leubitz

Mon Jun 20, 2011 at 16:56:57 PM PDT

Congresswoman Lynn Woolsey has long been rumored to be a possible retirement.  No matter how the lines are drawn, the Marin-Sonoma centered seat will be a safe Democratic seat.  She criticized the draft maps for removing Santa Rosa from the Marin-Sonoma based district that she represents.  In fact, she was really the most outspoken elected official on the maps.  The criticism rose a few eyebrows.

So, with that speculation running high, I got a little message in my inbox today:

WOOLSEY ANNOUNCEMENT

Rep. Lynn Woolsey (D-Petaluma), joined by Rep. Barbara Lee and friends and
family, will make an announcement at her home next Monday.

TIME: Monday, June 27, 2011 3:00pm

We'll keep you updated with more details next week.  Rep. Woolsey has always been an outstanding champion of progressive goals. If she does choose to retire, we must hope for a leader with dedication as strong as hers.

The candidates running if she retires (0.00 / 0)
Will be progressive activist Norman Solomon, State Assemblyman Jared Huffman and County Supervisor Susan Adams. I recently attended a rally in the 6th district (where I live) and all those candidates except Huffman were there (he would have attended but the budget kept him in Sacramento.)

She made her bed (2.00 / 1)
Lynn Woolsey has, throughout her tenure in Congress and before, been a staunch champion of zero growth policies and his consistently sided with every nimby group fighting development in her district.  Actions have consequences.  If you don't want people moving into your district you run the risk of the district disappearing.

Too bad you don't know what you're talking about. (5.00 / 1)
In California...as in the rest of the country...land use policies are set locally. Woolsey has been in Congress for nearly 20 years. She has had no role to play other than in expressing support for such principles as city-centered growth (as opposed to sprawl) and opposition to proposed casinos.

When she was on the Petaluma city council--and DID have power to affect growth policies--her voting record on growth issues was not by any stretch anti-growth.

Really? (0.00 / 0)
You honestly believe that Lynn Woolsey has no influence or power over land use in her district? Really?

OK...no point talking to you any further.

I don't just believe it--I know it as a fact. (0.00 / 0)
...and clearly, if you believe otherwise, you aren't familiar with the facts. But here are some indicators:

1) No representative of Rep. Woolsey has testified before the Sonoma County Board of Supervisors on a land use issue other than the proposed FIGR casino in the entire period of her tenure in Congress.

2) Likewise, no representative of Rep. Woolsey has testified before any Sonoma County city council on a land use issue other than the proposed casino.

Elected officials at higher levels are quite leery of trampling on the jurisdictions of other elected officials at lower levels--they need their support at election time. Woolsey's bailiwick is federal, and that's where she participates. Her impact on local land use policies has been negligible at most, if not completely absent, and that is appropriate. To argue that her tenure can best be characterized through the lens of local growth policies is simply a baseless assertion.

"Champion" of progressive goals. (5.00 / 1)
Well, she's been a good vote on the liberal checklist. But in terms of leadership, not so much. I can't think of a bill she wrote that became law, which is disappointing, because CA-6 is one of the most progressive districts in the country.
