Golden California? SEIU looks to elect moderate Republicans

by: Brian Leubitz

Thu Jun 09, 2011 at 11:38:29 AM PDT

SEIU has just made what they are calling a major shift in their political strategy. They are launfhing the "Golden California PAC" which will work to elect moderate Republicans in the legislature.

This could end up being a very risky proposition, but from their perspective, this has to be the time for the risk, right? We know that the districts under the new maps might make the addition of some moderates to the legislature somewhat more possible. And with the addition of the top two primary, maybe the extremism of the Republican candidate that reaches the general election.  Maybe more Democrats and DTS voters will support the so-called moderate Republicans.

More thoughts on this story to come...

'Moderate Republicans' ?
Isn't THAT a contradiction in terms ??

Presumably, 'Moderate' Republicans only want to beat up illegal aliens, but let them stay in California

Maybe they only want oil companies to pollute Santa Barbar beaches a 'little' bit
They probably only want to invade Canada and annex Poland

'Moderate' Republicans ?
Are those the guys supporting Nude Gingrich ??

a moderate republican (0.00 / 0)
Not all of us are supporting Frothy Mix Santorum or Nude Gingrich. My top choices are Fred Karger and Gary Johnson.

As we as moderate Republicans do recognize that tax cuts are not exactly salvation, and could cause problems.

As moderate Republicans we hold divergent views on the drug war, LGBT equality and abortion.

As moderate Republicans we recognize that big business and labor unions can be both the problem and the solution.

I do want clean air and water, but I do not want severe economic shock for compliance. Businesses are not stupid, many of them are fleeing California because the cost of compliance for AB 32 is hurting us big time. If we do not have jobs and industry then how will we get the revenue? When we drive one of our larger employers like Chevron out of our state then what will we do next?

and explain how exactly chevron could move out of california, seeing as the ports, markets, and oilfields are located in california and cannot be moved somewhere else.

it's also not a terribly large employer, all things considered, only #44 out of the top 50, with 5,000 employees. by contrast, the top 10 employers employ between 13,721 (UC berkeley) and 42,951 (32nd street naval station).

A long list of companies choosing other states instead of California to expand or leave to.

Wu,

Chevron's World Headquarters are in San Ramon California.  they are a huge employers in Contra Costa County.  The people who work at Bishop Ranch are the top management of the Chevron Corporation...very highly paid people....the very same people who pay the bulk of taxes in California.

Love Chevron or hate them, you are entitled to your own opinion but you are not entitled to your own facts.  If Chevron left California for Houston it would have a huge impact on the State's economy and tax base.

They may be only #44 but the large majority of the employers above them are government entities.  Defense, health, education, etc....all wealth consumers not wealth producers.

Tom Harmon (0.00 / 0)
Yep, I remember when "Moderate Republican" Tom Harmon was elected to the State Senate. His Republican opponent was Diane Harkey, who was considered to be much more conservative.

Harmon is/was probably moderate at heart than Harkey, but once elected the conservative Republicans "got him" and he votes consistently with them.

So the idea of courting so-called moderate Reeps strikes me as a fool's errand.

Tom Harman is a joke (0.00 / 0)
I thought about supporting him for AG, since he wasnt as nasty as John Eastman, but I am glad he was stopped because I was able to see his true mask when he had the Defend Prop 8 bill after the 2010 election. Would he defend Prop 19 as well? I guess not just like Steve Cooley.

and for Brian, there is a new district that expects to be 38.5D, 38.5R and will actually be quite competitive in the San Gabriel Valley. SEIU could find a Republican who is a public health nurse or public school teacher and go from there.

Moderate Republicans (5.00 / 3)
I have great respect and sympathy for moderate Republicans like yourself and unlike many Dems I want the Republican Party to continue because I think it keeps the Democratic Party from going off the left-hand deep end.

And it used to be that the existence of the Dems kept the Reeps from going off the right-hand deep end, but apparently that's no longer true.

I know many moderate Republican voters like yourself, but I don't think I can name any in California who hold partisan office. The Republican party savages any who pop their heads up, and co-opts any who manage to get elected.

I think it's sad for California and even sadder for your party. However, my point with Harman is that he is one who was co-opts. The state of Republican politics is such that there can be no such thing as a moderate Republican in partisan office, and I think SEIU is on a fool's errand.

but par for the course for SEIU.

Money goes both ways (0.00 / 0)
Its popular to think that lobbying money goes one way - buying votes.  But once a special interest group plays both sides it often finds itself building alliances and cutting deals it normally wouldnt to keep its 'investment"

Unions support Dems and don't have their calls taken (0.00 / 0)
Unions support Dems and don't have their calls taken. Why not do the same with the Reps?
