Look to Nevada?

Timm Herdt of the Ventura County Star focuses on a statement from Nevada Governor Brian Sandoval in today's must-read column:

One thing that hasn't changed in Nevada is that its Republican politicians continue to be fiscal conservatives. But if GOP lawmakers from California were to return to Reno this year to pick up any lessons, they might be surprised at one thing they'd learn.

They'd find out that the state's constitutional amendment, passed in 1994, that requires any tax increases be approved by a two-thirds vote of legislators includes a provision that gives ultimate authority to voters. To place a tax increase proposal on the ballot, it says, shall require only a simple majority vote of lawmakers.

Republican Gov. Brian Sandoval, who promised during his campaign to oppose any tax increases, appears to also believe that a public vote on taxes ought to carry more weight than his own opinion.

Asked whether he would sign a bill to put a tax increase on the ballot, Sandoval this week told the Las Vegas Review-Journal, "We'll cross that bridge when it comes, but I've always been supportive of people's right to vote."(Ventura County Star)

Now, let's say this first, Brian Sandoval is nobody's moderate.  He's a pretty right-wing governor, and hardly somebody that you could really call anything other than anti-tax/anti-goverment.

But, in the system we have out west, governments frequently defer (for better or worse) to the people.  Perhaps Tony Strickland and his TeaParty Caucus should consider the fact that despite what Grover Norquist is telling them, a vote for Brown's budget package will increase no taxes.  That's up to the people, and unless Tony and the Gang don't trust the people, he should get moving on that pronto.

Leave it to the people (2.00 / 1)
I would not have a problem deferring it to the people except for the fact that the unions will run a 60 million dollar ad campaign showing crime victims, closed schools and burning homes to try to scare the ill informed into voting for more taxes.  There is no tax payer group that can counter the money that the unions will pour into the propaganda.  If JB really wants to leave it to the people then he needs to also put a tax cut along with the 35 billion dollar services and education cut on the ballot.

Unless Jerry Brown and the Gang don't trust the people, he should get moving on that pronto.

Hahahaha (5.00 / 2)
Sounds like a great plan.  But when it comes down to it, the big spending on tax initiatives doesn't usually come from unions or "taxpayer" orgs, but instead from corporations.  For example, Chevron and other major corporations spent millions to pass Prop 26 and defeat Prop 24.

Also, there's no way labor puts $60 mil into the special. They just don't have that kind of money.  But you know who does? Altria (aka Philip Morris) and Chevron.

I think?

Great response! (0.00 / 0)
I enjoyed reading your response.  It made me laugh and smile.  You got your point across without flaming the poster.  Unlike some others, your civility is greatly appreciated.  You and I may disagree on some things but you are never disagreeable.  Thanks Brian for this site.  Good stuff.

Union Money (0.00 / 0)
From the NY Times:

Even with the cloud of uncertainty in Sacramento, Mr. Brown's aides and Democratic leaders have quietly begun laying the groundwork for a campaign on behalf of the tax extensions that is expected to cost $40 million to $60 million, a huge amount of money reflecting the cost of statewide television advertising here. Much of that money would come from state labor unions. Labor groups are already running polls and conducting focus groups that have, officials said, found great but not insurmountable resistance to tax increases.

It's not (0.00 / 0)
Like one is going to get rich as part of public sector employees union, My Dad sure never did, He could only afford to rent a small trailer in North Long Beach back then, He said He joined so He could get the retirement benefits as His Social Security wasn't going to be enough He said, Once He had those benefits He retired from being a Toll Taker on the Vincent Thomas Toll Bridge and more importantly away from those exhaust fumes. I'm not sure as to how long He was retired, But He didn't need them after 1993, As He'd died of Cancer, Possibly untreated, plus some fatal lead poisoning, Why? He didn't trust most Doctors He said, Possibly cause of His WWII experiences while being in the US Army's 368th Medical(N.Africa(1942), Sicily, Anzio(at the Hospital that was shelled), N.France & Occupied Germany until 1946), He was in Medical Records I think, At least that's what His letters to Mom implied, The letters said He was recommended for 2 commendations for His Paperwork involving both Allied Patients and POWs, But then He never talked about It. I later learned His Cancer had gone from His Prostate to His Spine or Brain, He was having trouble with the room temps being too low, He had the thermostat at 90F I think, He also mentioned He was in intense pain and that the Doctor wouldn't give Him anything for It, He was scheduled to see a Doctor the next day and that My Brother was supposed to take Him to the Doctor, Needless to say Dad didn't need to see the Doctor anymore when My Brother arrived the next day, Just the Coroner, Dad shot Himself and had a death grip on a .32 caliber gun My Brother said, In any case I was the last person that I know of at least to see Him alive, Could I have taken the gun? I don't think so, But I didn't want to get in a fight with Him, Not at His age(75). As to Prostate Cancer, It seems most have the HPV Human Papilloma virus that causes It, Of course not everyone gets Prostate Cancer and It seems to be the same danged Virus that's linked to Cervical Cancer too and as such It's spread sexually... As He didn't stray like this when He was married, Afterwards, He dated and I'd say He got the virus then as It's not an inherited disease, Mom sure didn't go out, She'd pass out after drinking only part of an alcoholic drink, Grandpa lived until He was 82 and only died in 1969 cause He was lonesome as His wife whom He married before 1917 had died a year before He did. If Dad didn't get the virus after the divorce, Then He must have dated on the side before hand without anyone knowing and We never saw anything.

I never was able to tell Him how I felt about His WWII service and such, but needless to say, I am proud of My Dad, But then He wasn't a draftee, He volunteered for Service as soon as War was declared by Congress, Even though cause of His eyesight 20/50 and 20/100 He wouldn't normally be accepted for service, But He knew how to manage people as He was a Route Manager for a Copley Newspaper, Could type(Hunt and Peck He said) and could drive a stick, Otherwise He'd have been told He was what was known as 4F or unfit for duty and for many years this was all that I knew about His WWII Service, He later got an award for His Newspaper service from After WWII from service to the Radio Free Europe Fund, It's a block of what looks like Lucite with a thin plaque buried within It along with a surviving piece of Barbed wire from the Iron Curtain.

Grover Norquist (0.00 / 0)
Grover Norquist, He's been accused of being a part of the Muslim Brotherhood, Now I really don't trust Him and on top of that since His wife was born a Muslim(She could not under penalty of Death marry a Non-Muslim from what I've read), Then He may also be one, So who is His loyalty(Fealty) to? The USA or? Al-Qaeda maybe?

Nevada (0.00 / 0)
I think that Nevada has a solid Republican legislature
They also have a Republican governor
They've had both for years

Yet, they're in fiscal difficulty too
A big part of the state's economic problems is the Bush recession

Cut spending in California, but go ahead and put the tax extension on the ballot for a vote
You DON'T NEED Republican support to get this on the ballot

WHY give Republican legislators a veto over the tax extension ?
Cowardly Democrats
