BREAKING: Marcy Winograd Officially Announces Run for CA36

by: Marta Evry

Thu Feb 24, 2011 at 20:28:50 PM PST

The Pasadena Star News is reporting tonight that Santa Monica resident Marcy Winograd will officially enter the race to replace her long-time opponent Jane Harman.

Anti-war activist and progressive Democrat Marcy Winograd said Thursday that she's planning a run for a soon-to-be-vacated South Bay congressional seat.

An official announcement is scheduled to be made at 10 a.m. Saturday at Fox Drugs, 1327 El Prado Ave. in Torrance, Winograd said.

Winograd, a Santa Monica resident, took 41 percent of the vote in last June's 36th Congressional District primary against Rep. Jane Harman, who is expected to resign Monday to lead the Woodrow Wilson International Center for Scholars, a Washington think tank.

Explaining her decision to run, Winograd said, "I feel that we need a real progressive in the race, somebody who has been advocating for a long, long time that we need to transition from a war economy to a green economy."

As I reported earlier, Janice Hahn's campaign apparently baited Winograd into running, hoping to split the progressive vote with Debra Bowen, a development which would benefit Hahn.

A PCCC poll released earlier this week between Bowen and Hahn put Bowen 4 points ahead. But an internal poll released by the Hahn campaign, which included Winograd, put Hahn 5 points over Bowen.

I think Winograd's supporters were as much motivated by wanting Harman out as anything, but she wasn't able to defeat her in a primary and couldn't likely win a general. It will be important to get the Firepups on board with Debra early.

Agreed (5.00 / 1)
Frankly, I'm baffled as to why she's running, except out of entitlement.

Bowen is no Harman. And in point of fact, neither is Hahn. I'll be very curious to see how she tries to contrast herself with them.

Instead of saying that Bowen and Hahn are different that Harman, perhaps you can use examples of where they have disagreed with Harman's positions in the past.

Bowen and Hahn, but especially Bowen, aren't Hawks. (0.00 / 0)
Bowen just put out a press release and a petition supporting Barbara Lee's out-of-Afghanistan resolution. That's certainly a departure.

Yes it is (0.00 / 0)
Of course it would have been more impressive if she had done so before the current campaign.  It's not like the war in Afghanistan just started.  But I would still love to see examples of where Bowen and Hahn have publicly disagreed with a stand of the incumbent Congresswoman's in the past(meaning before they became candidates).

And the war in Afghanistan (0.00 / 0)
had exactly what to do with Sec. Bowen's prior offices (and her campaigns for them)?

Afghanistan (0.00 / 0)
She has been asked numerous times as a member of the party central committee to take a position on the war and there have been many attempts by peace groups to get elected officials at all levels to publicly oppose the war.   But that's beside the point.  I am certainly not meaning to attack Debra Bowen.  I am simply asking for specifics as to why other people support her and why you think Winograd should step aside (based on issues, not political analysis).

For the record (0.00 / 0)
I'm not officially a "we" when it comes to wanting Winograd to step aside.  I'm inclined to think that as a descriptive matter, she's playing the spoiler against Bowen relative to Hahn, but if she wants to be that person, that is certainly her right.

Glad to hear it (nm) (0.00 / 0)

Winograd was a great challenger to Harmon (4.50 / 2)
But you have to have some sense of politics. Had she jumped in early, it likely would have kept Bowen out. But waiting until now when Bowen has announced is simply a stupid political move, and does not deserve to be supported.

Except (0.00 / 0)
that although she announced recently, she has been telling people there was a good chance she would run since right after Harman made her announcement (Washington Post political blog quoted her as saying she was running the next day)  and before Bowen even talked about running.  She already has a consultant and full campaign team on board and has been asking people if they would support her for sometime.  It is Bowen that is the newcomer and she clearly decided to run in spite of Winograd.  But what does that have to do with who would be the better member of Congress.  As for having a sense of politics, obviously if Winograd keeps the same support she had against Harman, she wins in a multi-candidate field.

[ Parent ]
It has everything to do with who will be elected (0.00 / 0)
As you can see from comments here, people who supported Winograd in primary against Harmon will not all be supporting her in a four-way race with another decent progressive in the field. The most likely effect of her entry is that the runoff becomes Hahn vs Republican. And lots of politicians talk about maybe running who don't actually follow through. People are either in or out. Considering running is like a little bit pregnant

[ Parent ]
That's true (0.00 / 0)
But since filing hasn't opened yet and there are still other elected officials who are considering the race and also many people trying to talk one person into changing his mind, it's not like Winograd is filing after the fact.

That is especially true since Winograd said long before Bowen (or Hahn for that matter) even said that they were considering the race, that she would probably run and just wanted to see how her supporters felt about the idea.

But I am not saying it's a good idea or a bad idea on her part.  I am just pointing out that many people (including me) defended Winograd's right to run against Jane Harman when party leaders were arguing that she would cause liberals to spend money that could otherwise go towards defeating Republicans.  Why is this any different?  Winograd believes that she will take the Democratic party in a different direction.  She has made the argument that with seniority being such a major factor in Congress it takes a fighter to make real change.  You can agree or disagree with that argument, but it really seems out of place to be acting like she has no right to be in the race and if you don't think she is the best candidate, I certainly wish you would give your reasons so that they can be considered by voters.

Sorry Marcy (0.00 / 0)
You won't get my support given there's already a great progressive in the race (Debra Bowen) and you didn't jump in earlier.

Timing is everything.

Disappointing (2.00 / 1)
I've neither been a huge fan nor a huge detractor of Marcy Winograd, but I always thought it was good for her to run against Jane Harman, thereby forcing Ms. Harman to face her constituents more often and help move her a bit toward the left on some issues.  I truly believe that Ms. Winograd has had some success in that regard--although not necessarily on the issue or two on which Ms. Winograd appears to be most vocal.

But now with Sec. of State Debra Bowen in the race, I don't see a compelling reason for anyone to actively support Ms. Winograd.  Ms. Bowen has tremendous policy experience on a range of relevant issues and she is a thoughtful progressive on most issues that are important to voters in that district and throughout much of the state.

It appears that Ms. Winograd is running primarily because of one (or two) foreign policy issue(s).  Certainly, Ms. Winograd has a right to run if she wants to and she'll probably get a meaningful share of the votes.  But given the makeup of the district, her entry into this race could inadvertantly provide a campaign advantage to Janice Hahn.

Make no mistake about it, there are meaningful differences between the more business-friendly, moderate Hahn and the more liberal-progressive, but not anti-business Bowen.

I have family and friends who live in that district and I will be urging them to actively support Debra Bowen for Congress.  Ms. Bowen would be a passionate fighter in Congress.  I hope voters will realize that this is essentially a contest between Bowen and Hahn and then vote accordingly.

Memory? Re: Disappointing (0.00 / 0)
Whatever your "reasons" for your stance, you seem to have lost memory of Marcy Winograd's previous campaign(s). Do you not now recall "Jobs not Warfare"?

You seem to have forgotten that, in addition to her other civic advocacy activities, Marcy is a high school teacher in one of the most notoriously vulnerable school districts in South LA. Her expertise in knowledge of the issues and solutions for education far outweigh those of other candidates.

And last, but far from least, the old intense misrepresentations of her stances about Israel, especially by Waksman, have now re-surfaced with shameFULL avengeance. And also, as always, she is working hard and tirelessly as an advocate for peace, civil liberties and productive lives for the oppressed peoples in countries throughout the Middle East and Northern Africa.

O personally have contributed early and often to the previous campaigns of both Winograd and Bowen. I am very aware of the "open primary"situation. But please, let us notindulge so intensely in knee jerk spins, often with little, if any resmblance to the truth.
