McNerney and Costa Look Likely to Retain Seats

by: Brian Leubitz

Thu Nov 11, 2010 at 17:50:59 PM PST

Incumbent Democratic Congress members Jerry McNerney and Jim Costa each had some very long election nights. But while it hasn't been easy, the good money is now on both of them sticking around another two years.

McNerney:

"With the vast majority of votes tallied, the results are clear. Congressman McNerney now has an insurmountable lead," McNerney campaign manager Doug Greven said in a news release. (IBA)

Costa:

Fresno Democrat Jim Costa declared victory Wednesday in a grueling battle to keep the 20th Congressional District seat after he took a 1,200-vote lead over Republican Andy Vidak, a political neophyte from Hanford.

"This has been a hard-fought campaign, obviously, but now it appears as if it is over," Costa said at a news conference.

Costa made his announcement after Fresno County elections officials released an updated vote count that put him ahead for the first time.()

Of course, there are a few votes left to count in both of these districts, but the math is just rough on both Harmer and Vidak.  The votes left are likely to favor the Democrats, making those numbers up seems extremely unlikely.

kamala harris just pulled ahead of cooley (0.00 / 0)
4,044,927 to 4,039,351, margin of +5,576.

Now (0.00 / 0)
It's about time, As of now there are only 898,458 ballots left in the whole state, According to the pdf here Los Angeles County has not been counted yet and It has the single biggest amount of ballots @ 208,513 or about 23.20%.

kamala harris increased lead again to 14043 (0.00 / 0)
harris 4,083,742 to cooley 4,069,699. i think she'll pull this one out.

[ Parent ]
Now it's down to 3,609. (0.00 / 0)
The L.A. Times story from tonight says this is the latest count:

Harris (D) 4,131,847
Cooley (R) 4,128,238

Adding what the 3rd party candidates already got from the not-quite-as-updated SoS site, this means we've already surpassed 9 million people voting in this race, and the margin is still THIS close.  Wow.

For a California race, this is impressive. (0.00 / 0)

if this goes to a manual recount (0.00 / 0)
it could take forever.

Umm, Excuse Me, But (0.00 / 0)
I don't know where You got those numbers from, But as of 6:52am Pacific Time the SOS site says they are still:

Kamala D. Harris (Dem)	4,083,742	45.9%
Steve Cooley (Rep)	4,069,699	45.7%

SOS website for AG Results in the Nov 2nd 2010 Election

Now If You'd like to share the site, Ok, Otherwise the SOS numbers are the only Official numbers.

A Suggestion to the Editorial Board (0.00 / 0)
Perhaps a short entry with a link to this page:

http://vote.sos.ca.gov/returns...

That has the Attorney General count, McNerney and Costa counts all on the same page.  Peg the entry to the top until the count ends and the results are certified.

As an aside, it is interesting to look at the total numbers of the two Congressional races.  In District 20, which ostensibly represents about 750,000 people, just over 80,000 voted, compared with over over 230,000 in District 11.  I remember the discussion at Netroots California about the flood of advertising money making the race close in CA-20, did it at the same time suppress turnout?

That link goes to the same results (0.00 / 0)
As I had posted and the facts have not changed one bit since then either. And I want Kamala Harris to win too, Sure She lives in San Francisco, It doesn't mean much to Me really as I was born in Los Angeles CA, Of course I did visit there once, Briefly as I was with My parents back then.

Um, I said right there... (0.00 / 0)
that it's from the L.A. Times story.  I even linked it, although it's hard to see on Calitics with this formatting.  Scroll your mouse over "L.A. Times story", and CLICK ON IT.  Sheesh, could you at least try to READ the first sentence in my post before accusing me of not providing a source?

Look, the SoS site is waaaaaaay behind the county counts.  If you want the latest updates, don't use the SoS site.

And on Eric Garcetti's Facebook note (Oh look!  There's a LINK right there!!) that's been keeping track of the latest counts, Max Kanin has reported that Cooley gained another 2,189 votes in Orange County, Harris gained 351 votes in San Francisco, and Cooley gained 77 in Ventura County, all from Saturday's counting after the L.A. Times story.  That would mean Harris is now up by only 1,694 votes.

And no, that won't be on the SoS site either, which still hasn't been updated since early Saturday morning.

I hear Ya, But... (0.00 / 0)

Ok here's an update on the AG Race (0.00 / 0)
Ok here's an update and on a Sunday no less:

	Kamala D. Harris (Dem)	4,094,756	45.9%
 	Steve Cooley (Rep)	4,080,667	45.7%

The difference is now 14,089 votes in favor of Harris.

[ Parent ]
harris continues to pull ahead, now at +31483 (0.00 / 0)
harris 4,127,981
cooley 4,096,498

859,203 left to count, 498,853 of which are in counties harris won, and 208,513 of which are in los angeles county alone.

How about a thread? (0.00 / 0)
The recent results are good news.  I wonder what Cooley's people are thinking right now.

This race deserves a thread of its own.  Can anyone make that happen?
