Late Night Video: It Gets Better

by: Brian Leubitz

Thu Oct 21, 2010 at 22:57:17 PM PDT

Dan Savage, after reading about suicide after suicide, started the "It Gets Better Project". Today, he got the "big get", by President Obama recording a message. The problem is tragic, but we can do so much more to prevent this needless loss of young lives.

No, it doesn't get better (3.00 / 1)
but it would have if Democrats had kept their promises and stopped persecuting gay folks.  Don't Ask, Don't Tell and the Defense of Marriage bill, both signed by Democratic presidents, send powerful messages out to society that it's OK to discriminate against, persecute, and hate gay Americans. These laws legitimate and validate bullying.  If Clinton had done his job ethically, 20 years ago, this would all be behind us, there would be no need for an "It gets better project", no gay teen suicides and martyrs, no crocodile tears from Mrs. Clinton, Mr. Obama and the Democratic Party establishment.  PLEASE:  enough of your BS.

Nobody who has tried to keep a relationship together without marriage, tried to have bilogical children on a low salary or had to contend with the glass ceiling barring a good salary....no one thinks it gets better.  The ache just gets worse.

Honestly, that's bull (0.00 / 0)
It is a ridiculous statement, as Maggie Gallagher has said, that what she has done has had no effects on teen suicides. At the same time, it is a ridiculous statement to say that politics can change over night, or that this situation is entirely due to politics.

Absolutely, the world would be a better place free of homophobia, but our leaders can only nudge the country away from that. If you recall, things could have been a lot worse, and sometimes we have to play defense as well.

Do we need to end DADT now? Absolutely. DOMA, marriage equality, etc. All of that.  But yes, there is going to be struggle involved. We can't simply give up and check out of the system.

I think?

Clinton and Congress (2.00 / 1)
Back then Clinton signed legislation that He didn't like for good reason, It's called a Congressional Override, Republicans had an absolute majority back then in Congress and were willing to override a veto just to get their negative way.

[ Parent ]
Override needs 2/3rds (4.00 / 1)
And the GOP never had 2/3rds.

That said, enough Democrats voted for DOMA for the initial vote to have been over 2/3rds, and the bill was presented to the President during the last months of the 1996 campaign...

The decision to sign was more of a political calculation not to throw more red meat to the homophobic bigots of the right, I suspect.

This is great. (5.00 / 2)
Seriously great... think about this, this was said by the President of the United States of America.

Tell me there is no difference between Obama and Bush and I will sock you in the jaw.

Thank you Mr. President!

I live in Oakland and I like talking about politics. Who'd have thunk I'd be writing here?!
