CNN Poll Shows Widening Leads for Democrats

by: Brian Leubitz

Wed Sep 29, 2010 at 17:30:00 PM PDT

A bit of news on the horse race front today.  A new poll from CNN has good numbers for Brown and Boxer:

According to a CNN/Time/Opinion Research Corporation poll released Wednesday, 52 percent of likely voters in the Golden State say they support Democratic Sen. Barbara Boxer, with 43 percent backing Republican challenger Carly Fiorina. ...

In the fight for governor, the poll indicates that 52 percent of likely voters back California Attorney General and former Gov. Jerry Brown, the Democratic nominee, with 43 percent supporting former eBay CEO Meg Whitman, the GOP nominee.

The interesting thing to note here is that both candidates are now over that magical 50% figure.  The last week has been kind to Democratic candidates across the nation, as Democrats are beginning to wake up from their slumber and realize that there is an election about to happen.  Here in California, Boxer and Brown have both fairly well consolidated their bases, and the big push now is to get them to the polls.

With Meg Whitman having a lovefest with Texas on the debate last night, and Carly Fiorina hanging out with the Tea party at every conceivable chance, the question is how the two Republicans plan on getting the middle.  They simply cannot win with the base alone in California.  They are each rapidly turning off California's middle.

I suppose it was just a matter of time.

Palin/Beck vs. Obama (4.00 / 1)
I know that neither Boxer nor Fiorina would accept this, but their race is really a proxy for the larger fight between Palin and Beck vs. Obama.  If you accept the Palin/Beck view of the world, then it makes no sense at all to vote for Boxer.  Fiorina is your candidate.  If you accept Obama's view of the world, then the choice is clearly Boxer.  This is not a close call.

In a better world, the US Senate would not be such a team sport.  Individual Senators would make independent judgments about each issue.  We don't live in that world.  In the US Senate there are two teams: Red Team and Blue Team. Choose one.  That's it.

I'm so angry with the corporate sellout (0.00 / 0)
Which is what Obama has been that, honest-to-God, if Palin runs against him, I'd vote for her.  (A white male dingdong, I'm not so sure.)

So I'm not sure you can say this race is a proxy for Palin 2012.  I'd cast several votes for Brown and Boxer if I could, but the first time I weakened on Boxer was when she was out there speechifying with the Big 0 a few months back.  I really don't know how to express how angry he's made some of us.

Well, enjoy that bloody stump at the end of your face (1.00 / 1)
Is the President perfect? Far from it, but the choice between Obama and Palin is a close one? Oh, don't be silly. The ramifications of a Palin presidency are too awful to consider.

We need to keep up the pressure on the President and Congress to do the right thing. After all, a plurality of Americans thought the health care bill didn't go far enough.  But, Rome wasn't built in a day, and if we are to move forward we can't get discouraged at the very beginning.

I think?
