Maldonado confirmed; dates for SD-15 special election set

by: Dante Atkins

Tue Apr 27, 2010 at 17:13:26 PM PDT

Secretary Bowen tweets:

Abel Maldonado sworn in today as Lt Gov, meaning SD15 needs a special election. And Governor just proclaimed it: 6/22 primary, 8/17 general.

That means: less than four months to build a campaign that can prevail in a very winnable special election with a not insignificant Democratic registration advantage.

worst timing ever (0.00 / 0)
August elections suck.

We would have been way better off having it earlier, but of course Karen Bass failed. I'm adding this to the very long list of everything that turned to shit because she touched it. Most counterproductive lawmaker I've ever seen, if you agree with her on an issue you are quite right to panic.

Sounds like no one should expect a budget before August 18th.

said that Maldonado is the son of Mexican immigrants, so has he said anything about the Arizona immigration law?

He has, actually (0.00 / 0)
SacBee:

Although Arizona's law was passed by Republican lawmakers, it received a cool reception from Arnold Schwarzenegger, California's GOP governor, and an even chillier response from California's incoming interim lieutenant governor, Abel Maldonado, a Republican and the son of a Mexican immigrant.

"I don't think it's a good idea to have an American citizen have to - when they enter Arizona - have to take a passport just in case you get pulled over by law enforcement," Maldonado said. "If you happen to be an African American, if you happen to be a Latino, if you happen to be of color, the first thing they could ask you is, are you here legal or not. I think that goes over the top."

wow. (0.00 / 0)
those dates are absolutely ridiculous.

We probably couldn't consolidate the primary with the statewide primary; given the HAVA rules for absentees, it's probably too late for that.

But holding it two weeks later? It's almost like it's designed to discourage turnout.
