Garamendi Victory Thread

by: Robert Cruickshank

Tue Nov 03, 2009 at 22:12:13 PM PST

The US Congress is about to get a new - and very progressive - member. John Garamendi has been elected tonight to represent the 10th Congressional district. We always said the 10th could do better than Ellen Tauscher, and tonight Garamendi proved it. From a press release sent out by the Garamendi campaign:

"Today, the voters have spoken; they still have hope and still want change," Garamendi told a crowd of hundreds of enthusiastic supporters. "I will hit the ground running in Congress and look forward to casting a vote for comprehensive health care reform that includes the public option, helping to enact President Obama's vision for America."

Added Garamendi, "We stayed true to ourselves throughout this campaign, articulating a vision for the district and America that is bold and necessary. President Obama's federal stimulus package helped save us from the brink of economic ruin, but our work is not done. At this moment of crisis in America, we need leadership that will create green jobs and take on the powerful interests delaying reform.  More than three decades in public service have prepared me for this moment, and you better believe I didn't run for this seat to be a backbencher."

The emphasis there is mine, and it's important. Garamendi isn't going to walk into Congress on Thursday (when he is likely to be sworn in) and take a quiet seat in the back. No, as one of California's leading progressives, he is going to take his decades of policy experience and leadership and start working immediately to produce better, more socially democratic outcomes in the House. I'm excited about Congressman John Garamendi.

If Garamendi is sworn in on Thursday, he will resign his seat as Lieutenant Governor the same day. No word yet on who Arnold plans to appoint to that seat.

Congratulations to John Garamendi!

this makes the 2010 redistricting more interesting (5.00 / 1)
especially given that the region between sacramento and the delta is currently one of the more complex gerrymanders in the state. it is entirely possible that garamendi ends up in a district roughly similar to lois wolk's 5th senate district.

great to see tauscher out, garamendi in, and the old lie about the 10th being "conservative" put permanently to rest.

I am trying my hand (0.00 / 0)
at a revised gerrymandering, and thought about putting all of Solano into one district, putting it with part of Sacramento and making that district Garamendi's. Now that Tauscher is out of the house, Livermore doesn't need to be in the 10th anymore, so I gave the Alameda part of the 10th to McNerney, and will split Contra Costa between George Miller (west) and McNerney (east), making Miller's district completely in Contra Costa, and pulling McNerney's westward so I can slip some of San Joaquin out of there. Where I will put the San Joaquin parts I haven't yet figured out.

Also, since Yolo is only a fraction of a congressional district, I am thinking about attaching that whole county to part of Sacramento to make life even harder for Lungren. That will mean I will have to do a lot of shifting between the 1st, 2nd, and 4th districts.

Check out the 2010 California races and help us take back Red California!

yolo, butte, upper wingnuttia (0.00 / 0)
and either napa or sac could make for an interesting 3rd district along the lines of the old vic fazio 3rd. solano-yolo-delta could also be interesting. for sheer superficial aesthetic reasons i'd like to see the yin-yang 10th and 11th made more compact, but i'm aware that every new line has knock-on effects on everything neighboring.

Yolo doesn't deserve to be stuck in Hergerland (0.00 / 0)
And tacking it on to the tail end of Thompson's district always seemed like a personal dig at Assemblywoman Helen Thomson.  Yolo was gerrymandered so that both Senate & Congressional districts covering Davis had strong Democratic incumbents, blocking her from moving up.

I drew lines that had all of Yolo, most of Solano, southern Sacramento, and the eastern fringe of CoCo together.  It looked like perfect Garamendi land to me.

not hergerland (0.00 / 0)
but a south sac valley college town + farm swing district. less pleasant for me personally than the solano-yolo-coco delta seat, but if drawn to be a slight dem district it could help in the larger goal of turning inland nor cal bluer.

we could create an über-hergerland 2nd if we combined the north sac valley with the northern half of the current 4th, that might allow us to shift the 3rd and 4th to our column.

BTW, your lines would make a pretty nice district (0.00 / 0)
for lois wolk, once she gets termed out of the state senate. you could call it the I-80 district.

I just want to say congratulations (0.00 / 0)
to Mr. Garamendi. I think he deserved it. At least David Harmer could take pride in the fact that he won the Alameda County portion of CD-10.

"You've slipped into my life as easily as vermouth into a glass of gin... quickly and just a bit too smooth"

Garamendi's a SOLID supporter of Single-Payer (0.00 / 0)
John Garamendi was a very strong supporter of SB 840 (keuhl) - the comprehensive single-payer health care plan for all Californians, which passed through both the Senate and Assembly twice - and vetoed by Der Gropenfueher twice, and which will be re-introduced by Senator Leno as SB 810.  He will be a great addition to the Congress on progressive issues like health care, and concerns of working men and women including the Employee Free Choice Act. I couldn't ask for a better replacement for Ms. Tauscher.  Go John Go!

Redistricting 2011 for the 2012 election (8.00 / 1)
California could gain a district or two, most likely in the areas with growth.
I see a potential split in this area as:
Garamendi could get Walnut Grove to Stockton
McNerney Pleasanton to Livermore
Miller Concord to Fairfield
Creating a new district for Clayton, Walnut Creek, Lamorinda & Danville.
