You Almost Feel Bad for These Republicans Challenging Jane Harman...Almost

by: Brian Leubitz

Sun Oct 25, 2009 at 09:20:59 AM PDT

Jane Harman isn't exactly popular around these parts.  Or around her district, to tell the truth.  But while Marcy Winograd challenges her from the left for the CA-36 seat, this attack from the right is rather silly. There are two fine candidates in the primary, both profiled in the Daily Breeze today.

Pete Kesterson, a tea party activist, and is running on a campaign in opposition to "out of control debt."  But, this man has just about every strike possible against him.  While he is running his campaign on "fiscal sanity," he has filed for bankruptcy twice and currently under-earning his monthly expenses by $1,000.

His opponent, Mattie Fein, just moved from Washington, DC to Venice to run fir the seat. But, you know, we learned that a carpetbagger can occasionally squeak out a win in CA-04, so just to make this Keystone Cops thing complete, Fein abandoned a house in Kentucky after having "fallen victim to unscrupulous lending practices."

This crew sounds like something straight out of opposition research central casting, you'd almost think Harman recruited these people into the race herself.  Either way, this is a safe Democratic seat, whomever comes out of the primary stands a fantastic chance in the general.

Brian's column on 36th District Republicans (0.00 / 0)
Brian,

Your post is obviously is a relay of the Daily Breeze piece..but is void of several truisms.

1) It does seems as if I had absolutely no ties to the District which is false.  We have ties to the District and California as my son was born in the state and we have long residences there as well.

2) you should not feel sorry for a situation among the "republicans" as I unforunately inherited this situation among many trusts and trustees.  The situation is far more complicated than the Breeze elabaorates on.

3) I am the only Republican that that will get most of the Republican California Congressional Delegation endorsement due to my credentials.

4) Jane has also been a victim of her own success as she has lost more than $100 million in investments personally this past year.  Regardless of bailouts etc. you should know that frankly it is the Republicans that could have only hoped, and certainly a potential candidate like myself, to have an incumbent with more problems..it is a GOP candidates dream.

What ties to the district are these? (0.00 / 0)
Granted, as we saw last fall with Tom McClintock the California GOP isn't much bothered by carpetbagging. But I am curious what exactly these "ties" are.

I've lived in California most of my life (in the 48th, 9th, and now 17th Congressional districts) and could claim "ties" to virtually any district in Southern California. But that doesn't mean quite the same thing as having deep personal roots in or experience with a particular district.

Again, as McClintock proved, there's no shame or even political peril in being a carpetbagger. But at least treat your electorate with respect by acknowledging that fact instead of hiding it.

You can check out any time you like but you can never leave

waddling over (0.00 / 0)
Brian,

Also, as bad you as you may feel for me which is totally unwarranted, you don't see any republicans "waddling over" as Jane Harman did in the wiretapping incident to help obstruct justice..Bottom line..there's no getting around that.
